Afternoon all
I have been tidying out one of the cupboards in the kitchen and discovered a jar of balti sauce (not very OS I know but I do make my own now) with a best before date of Oct 2009  Given that I moved into current house in 2010, I can only assume it moved house with me :rotfl:
Anyway, I was just pondering whether or not to use it - as would feel bad throwing it away- what do you reckon?

Bookworm has it got one of those buttons in the middle that you press. If not I would go off how it smells - if it hasn't been opened then hopefully nothing should have got in to make it 'spoil'. If the jar is airtight, I should think it would be fine. It would probably discolour (go 'brown') before it went bad and it is going to be cooked, not eaten raw.My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0

Thanks Mothernerd
Yes it was one of those sealed jars with the press bit in the lid. It was fully sealed as it popped well when I opened it. Smelt ok and I've decided to risk it....:p I will make sure it is well heated through....0 -
... I will go out later (taking advantage of the closed road) and pick some more - you can't beat a nice crisp apple straight off the tree and they taste even better when they are free:D. I will take a Tupperware pot too because I know where there are some ripe blackberries - maybe I can feel a crumble coming on.
Got distracted again earlier & meant to say yum to fresh apples! I think my fruit of choice for the next 12 months is going to be plums - I now have 2 freezer drawers full of them. How bored was I with all that stoning :rotfl: but I couldn't leave them there. My plum tree goes mad every 3rd year with a bumper crop, & there are still loads at the top of the tree that I can't reach, along with loads of windfalls. Sadly DD & DS hate plums... I'm usually a bit fed up after a few months of plum pie :rotfl:Afternoon all

BW - sure it'll be fine. I regularly eat OOD stuff, some far more OOD that yours. I just have a good sniff & if it smells OK it gets used. That also goes for fresh stuff - we regularly eat soya yogurts that are a month past their BBD.
I used to do quite well out of a friend who wouldn't eat anything past its BBD, but sadly I don't live in that town any more. Kept my grocery bills down for months.
Well any hope I had of my DS returning from his week long Scout camp with better organisational skills has been dashed. They moved campsites each day having to pack & unpack - he managed to ignore all of the plastic bags I'd given him for laundry & his swimming kit, & just kept putting the wet stuff back with the dry stuff :wall: so you can imagine how rank it smelled when we got it home. He'd also managed to bring home most of the packed lunch I gave him for the trip out  Why he hadn't thought to throw it away I don't know, but he found he had 3 stale baguettes in his bag too :rotfl:
He was very proud of staying in the same clothes for the first 4 days, & only managed to use 3 out of the 7 pairs of pants I gave him. Didn't clean his teeth all week. So glad I wasn't in his tent.
But he had a fantastic time, & we have thoroughly scrubbed him :rotfl:. I have taught my two the importance of personal hygiene, but so far its fallen on deaf ears & both need nagging (& nagging, then shouting at).
Back to work tomorrow - playing hunt the security pass this evening. Hugs to anyone with the Sunday night blues.....& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

JKS - I could just eat some plum crumble, unfortunatly nothing grows in our garden, thou DD has some fruit trees in pots suppose to be gooseberry, raspberry and pass to the other one, - we did have 3 raspberries.... she has a tomato plant - but the neighbour been looking after it she has 4 tomatos on it, but there green one is quite funny looks like a pear - not sure whether there the green tomato's for chutney making only time will tell.
All ok at the hospital, todays food order went it - pear cut thinly - no peel - and tomorrows request is a fish paste sandwich... guess whos got to nip to the shop en-route!
Had a different visit today... took over the treatment room on the ward, was giving palm readings for the nurses and HCA's, one was so funny, the best way to describe the lady was she goes "window shopping" - but not for clothes (apparenty I was spot on!!) xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
Evening all
JKS I love plums and cannot understand anyone who doesn't. I had a chat with a neighbour on my way to my second walk (armed with carrier bag and Tupperware box), he was telling me that his plum tree did not produce much fruit this year and what it had rotted on the tree (one week green the next rotten) but his mum apparently has loads as well as loads of cooking apples and eaters. He is going to ask her for plums and cookers for me.
The road was not as closed as I had thought and could have cursed when one decent apple dropped off the tree into the road, however, the corner is a bit blind and the road is fast so I didn't risk jumping into the road to pick it up. I took a slightly different route through the park and found a blanket and a pile of clothes (a sure sign of someone sleeping out waiting for the gates of the festival to open). I have never seen so many police in all my life and I bumped into my local Sgt - I told him about the clothing etc that I had found (I will see him at the Tasking Meeting on Wednesday). I didn't make the crumble - I got home too late.
Having this music festival in the park has been fun and I have seen some strange sights. As I was heading towards the bottom of the park after cutting in again after the apple picking, I spotted a tall woman in full evening dress and tip toeing across the very wet grass/mud in extremely high heels. Saw a woman who had set up outside the fence with a chair, a blanket and a picnic and her kids (she could listen to the music and not pay to get in). Bumped into more police and had a chat when they had to hurry off - it took 4 police officers to help the security officers eject 9 stupid boys (no idea what they had done but when I spoke to another security officer - one of the ejected came and demanded to be let in but as he had no wristband and had been forcibly removed, he wasn't getting back in - he just walked past the officer.
I wandered down the drive, looking this time for crab apples to see if there were any low down that I could pick. I then wandered to another driveway where 2 security men were on duty - to monitor the ins and outs as well as the barriers across the road. This very nice white Mercedes appeared, followed by a ratty old Fiesta and this was followed by a large van with blacked out windows - this little entourage pulled up on the other side of the road. Security had to go and see what was up and to give them directions - I asked who it was and apparently the flashy car was driven by a member of Union J and the Fiesta was driven by his mum. Pixie Lott arrived in a van that reminded me of an undertakers van. I didn't see her because the windows were blacked out.
The festival is now over for another year thank goodness (oh I don't mind it, I cannot stand the screeching girls nor artistes that rap or can't sing properly - call me old lol).0 -
Any chance I can borrow the 'man in the cupboard' please
I'm looking into getting a new electric cooker as the one I have was left behind by the previous owners and is pretty old and not particularly good. However, in order to get a new one fitted, it's looking like I will have to get the current kitchen switches/connection upgraded.
Soooooo that means having to deal with various electricians coming in to quote. I'm sure that I will get the usual shake of the head and sighs and general, "I wouldn't have done xyz".
I definitely would prefer having someone who could help me with this kind of stuff.

Need to go back and catch up on previous posts but just dropping in to say that DD had her college induction day today. :j
Well she's home in one piece and hasn't stopped talking since. Got the right bus there and back (she has previous for catching wrong buses :rotfl:) Loved her first day and has signed up for tennis, netball, rounders, badminton, volleyball, Duke of Edinburgh, choir, world challenge, henna, performing arts enrichment, gym, archery, sports leaders course and not forgetting knit and natter! Think she may be a tad ambitious with that lot on top of 5 A-levels but we'll see how she goesShe can't wait to get back there (I think it may have been the sausage roll she had for lunch that swung it for her
).
Now to get DS back to high school tomorrow (organisation is not a strong point with him )0
