This is me de-lurking for the umpteenth time.
Bookworm (and everyone else in similar situations) I can sympathise with having any sort of work done in your living space. I'm finally having my kitchen entirely replaced as it's 15 years old (original when these flats were built) and there have been a great many things about it that have been annoying me since I moved in 9 years ago.
Dealing with a project like this makes me very anxious (hence the long prevarication) mainly because like many of you I hate having to deal with plumbers, builders, plasterers and electricians and this will involve the whole lot. It may be assumed that men are equipped to get on with this sort of thing - well, I must have been off school whenever that lesson was taught! At my age I suppose I should really be able to do this on my own but my dad's been doing a lot of the organising having been through this a few times himself.
The plan is it will all be done by the end of September.
Couple of other things: I've signed up to study with the OU. It's just a single module as I work full-time but it still means several months of study and a three hour exam next summer. (I haven't sat an exam that long since I was 19!) I felt I needed some intellectual stimulation in my spare time to stop me vegging on the sofa so much like I am just now and my work is paying for it too. Also put my name down for a music tuition group - only meets once a month but it's something else to do and it might even improve my mediocre keyboard skills (such as they are).
I've found it's so easy being on your own (no kids or pets here) to just mooch about and not really achieve anything in time outside of work. Then when work rolls round again it seems like you were only just there ten minutes ago. I'm determined to do de-mooch my life as much as I can as it can't be doing me any good.
Best wishes to everyone.0 -
grousescot - dont worry I hadnt sat an exam for over 20 yrs when I started with the OU, what course are you doing, even better that your employer is paying espically with the costs now. xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0

Hey Grousescot - nice to 'see' you. Well done on signing up with the OU and a music group. You have my sympathies with the kitchen. I'm focusing on the end result
as find that helps

Best wishes with that OU course from me too Grouse Scot. Re the paying by employer, that certainly helps a lot. I know that OU fees have shot up in recent history and I have a vague idea they might be as much as £5,000 pa now:eek::eek:. So much for supposed to be affordable by everyone then...
MummyBoble - your daughter has signed up for HOW much? Coo......I presume she would actually like the chance to get some sleep once in a while..:rotfl:
A'right...must get on with the food preserving....I've got absolutely LOADS of tomatoes to preserve. I couldn't quite believe how little I paid for them myself:). Must have a go at lacto-fermenting some of them (fermenting veggies will be a first for me). Instructions say use whey or blackcurrant leaves respectively. I'm guessing that I could use some milk kefir I have instead of whey. Don't suppose anyone knows?? Well, at that price, it wont be disastrous if that little experiment doesn't work out.0 -
Hello peeps
Good news Mum2One about your dad and your other news (as you can see now that I have scrolled down the page I have forgotten it).
GrouseScot - I went back to college last year to gain some more modern computer qualifications (my RSA III Typing is not worth much these days), I managed to get distinctions and I hadn't sat any exams since 1984. You will do brilliantly, I am sure.
I was without the internet for the whole of yesterday afternoon and night (there was a fault somewhere as the whole area was out). I went for a walk - watched them dismantling the music festival, this huge ride fitted on 2 large lorries plus a trailer, watching them faff about was comical for me at least. I went to get some blackberries and found a spot in the old orchard that folks tend to ignore, I picked about 1lb (don't want to be too greedy) so today I shall bake using my free eating apples too:D I was going to make up a cake recipe and bung some blackberries into it as well as apple.
Think I must be a witch, for a few days' now I have thought that I have got to do something on Thursday 11 September but knew I hadn't any appointments in my diary - on checking my email this morning I have an interview on 11 September at 1.30pm:j I have booked a hair appointment for Tuesday of that week. Fingers crossed I get the job (it is the job that I faffed around with the application for - the one I kept saying that I had done a bit more until I had finally submitted it).
Managed to change a lightbulb too - the long life bulb in this room (according to bulb it had a 6 year life span so I am assuming it was put in by the old dear that used to live here) decided to give up the ghost last night, I keep a few such bulbs in the meter cupboard and got my mini step ladder and stood on the bottom step and changed the bulb. Hopefully it won't need changing for another 10 years:D0 -
Well, Horace, I spent the morning recently wondering how much the cheque would be for for the Premium Bond win that was going to turn up in the post that day.
Cue...envelope coming through the door and me holding my breath whilst I checked out the figure and it was only for £25:(.
Tried to remind my self that "Every little helps" and didn't manage to convince myself:cool:0 -
Grousescot Lovely to 'see' you.
What are you studying with the OU? It is great that your employer is going to be funding it.
I don't mind studying but absolutely hate final exams - my mind just goes blank and I get so nervous (well it/I did when I was 15, 16 and 17! :rotfl:)
Edited to add - I was so glad when I went to college and discovered that there were no final exams to achieve my HND just continuous assessment as that style of assessment suits me better.A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realise how blessed you are.

I'm lucky with light bulbs, I have a son tall enough to change them without standing on anything.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
