Thanks also from me! We've been 'Old-Styling' it without knowing that's what it was called for a while, and I was starting to think it was only me. Pleased to find out I'm not the only person who tries to cook from scratch and clean with bicarb (I'm thinking of buying shares in Supercook....). It's a lovely community here too.
We've done plenty of jam and baking this year, but not got round to pickling... although it's Friday night, so a bottle of wine is on the horizon. Does that count?? :rotfl:0 -
Thanks from me too! I have picked up lots of ideas already, not just for old-style savings but for my business and website too.
But most of all - I've become quite domesticated. I've cooked with Spaghetti Squash (until recently didn't know it existed), pickled some green tomatoes (recipe from this site) and stewed and froze apples. 24 years ago I gave up baking because all my cakes tuned out c**p and this week I baked the 'Weetabix cake' (found on this website) :j
Not only did I enjoy it, it tasted good too,
so 3 cheers to moneysaving old style   :beer:He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Can I hop on board and add my thanks too? Since reading this board I have not bought bread - now make my own, I menu plan so have less waste and more options, bake cakes instead of buying biscuits for lunch boxes, have had a go at making jam (blackberries from up the lane, apples from the apple tree) and had a bash at making wine, and am starting to 'FLY', to list just a few. So.............
Thankyou all!0 -
Me as well, this forum has saved me - in dire financial difficulties but this place has shown me I can reduce my outgoings while improving the quality of my life and that has been like a big gift, you've no idea
You lot have motivated me like you wouldn't believe. I've had at least 6 weeks of making soup and taking it to work (or chilli or curry) saving me a conservative £80-£100 on that alone! I'm cooking from scratch and am getting my 5 a day for the first time in years. And I feel so, dunno, proud. I'm cleaning and decorating and flinging and feeling positive about all areas of my life for the first time in a long time.
I've been wondering how to say thanks to you all without sounding like a sap but I figure in this instance sap will do fine. Seriously, I don't know what it is about this forum but from the handiest tip to MrBadExamples cooking to the daily thread to the Christmas stuff, it has helped me in so many ways. I could sit and tot up the monetary value but I have a suspicion the internal stuff that's going on for me is worth a whole lot more

Today I got a print out from school of what my kids were eating before I went OS and always do packed lunches. It was cr*p. and expensive as well.
Now they have at least 5 a day and eat it, they also have brown bread sandwiches, no junk filled rubbish and a healthy home cooked dinner (even tonight when I didn't want to cook dd1 (aged12) made pizzas for them) so not only am I os but so are the kids.
Thanks everyone and keep going with the tips.0 -
I'd like to say thanks too,I had been a lurker for some time before posting. And this saved me money, it's made me menu plan properly for the whole week. This makes shopping easier, we have only bought what we need from the supermarket, and havent paid £30 for a carton of milk since!! My cupboards and freezer are tidier as I'm using stuff up. OH is pleased with the bank balance and life in general is rosy. Oh and I've got the stardrops bug. Thanks...0

I've got the 'Stardrops' Bug too, not to mention the 'Microfibre Cloth' Bug, the 'Asda Yellow Sticker' Bug (badly!
), the 'Cooking Up Goodies Your Granny Made' Bug (which is showing every sign of becoming the 'Big Butt Becomes Bigger' Bug) and the incurable 'Attempt To Make Every Penny Do The Work Of A Pound' Bug. All symptoms of galloping OS-itis.
But for one so sickening, I ain't half happyEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
I would also like to say a big thank you. I find that I save money just by lurking around MSE because it keeps me motivated and as someone said previously it is great to know there are other people out there that share a similar attitude to spending/saving. 95% of my friends are into consumption (friend I saw yesterday just paid $7000 for a lounge suite) so it can be a lonely journey being OS.
Today for breakfast I had a two egg omelette made with eggs from my chooks (and herbs and siverbeet from the garden) that were given to me and cost nothing to feed as we have so much green at the mo that they are turning their beaks up at pellets. I tried to gift some of the eggs to work collegues but they insisted on paying for them so when I do have to pay for pellets I will have the cash. Great free food. Now no one I know would appreciate the pure joy of eating an almost free breakfast but I bet MSE OSers would see the genius of it.
Thanks again everyone.
Thank you to MSE contributers who are a great help to keep me motivated to take care with my spending.0 -
