I am a big Robin Hobb fan.. fantasy fiction.. they are on kindle. They are written in trilogy's..
Having been in hospital myself not long ago and fairly immobile my 'wish list' would be ..
wet wipes,
straws for drinks and a bottle of squash for my water jug.
i'm not sure if she would be able to get to showers but if not 'dry shampoo'
snuggly type blanket .. just a small one that reminds me of home
is she on a ward with others? if so scrabble, checkers or something?
i hope she gets well soon0 -
My fave ever book is Replay by Ken Grimwood. I fail to see how anyone wouldn't like it

No idea if it's available on kindle though...
Can you play a board game with her? A jigsaw for her maybe? Things I like, but appreciate not everyone does lol!
Jx
Replay isn't available on Kindle, I checked. There's an audiobook of it though... could try that? I think I can download it on to the tablet I got her for Christmas.
We have a few board games so I shall see what I can do there. Fortunately, there's a bit of space in the bedroom so I've moved a coffee table in and I'll set up the chairbed as a sofa and bring in a foot rest for her leg. Then she won't have to spend all day in bed and she'll be closer to the toilet and we'll be able to sit down together
Is there a TV where she's resting with a DVD player? Maybe a box set of her favourite series, or a series she's been dying to watch? Or if you have Netflix get that set up where she can see?
As it happens there is a TV in the bedroom and I had a look on Argos website earlier and found a Blu-Ray player with Smart TV functions that has access to Netflix, Lovefilm and Blinkbox on there for £99.99 and I have a £20 coupon to use so I've ordered it for collection and I shall go and pick it up on my way to the hospital later.Desperado99 wrote: »best fantasy series - The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E Feist (starts with Magician)

Thanks for the recommendations and well wishes!0 -
I second the Belgariad and Discworld books. Also, The Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weiss and Tracey Hickman are really good too. Even my ex who was more of a Jack Higgins fan loved the Dragonlance books.0

My favourite book of all time is Becoming Madam Mao by Anchee Min. I was absolutely hooked. Not sure if it's on Kindle as I had a paper copy, but highly recommended.
Have you read White Swans - Three daughters of China? A book I always recommend.

Fascinating book. I've read Mao- The Unknown Story (very hard going full of facts). I have yet to read Madam Mao, definitely on my list.
The book I was bought for Christmas was Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Very interesting story of his life.

Yes, after a wonderful holiday we've returned to England and my now-wife has landed herself in hospital. It seems on her first day back to work she slipped outside her offices, fell backwards awkwardly, dislocating her leg, breaking her arm and wrist and her head went into a window.
 OUCH!
I don't read much fantasy, but there's a quirky Japanese author I can recommend whose work might vaguely fall into that category because of his surreal and somewhat dreamlike writing.
Haruki Murakami is the author and he's written a load of books and 2 volumes of short stories.
After Dark and Norwegian wood are two of my favourite novels of his, and then Blind Willow Sleeping Woman (short stories).0 -

She's been transferred to a ward now but I don't know yet whether she's with others or in a private side room. She injured herself leaving work quite late and she was still in the assessment cubicles of the A&E at 1am when I had to leave her.
I shall have a see what home comforts I can bring for her. I don't know how long she will be in hospital. She had mild confusion when she was first taken to hospital but by the time I left her she seemed to have regained most of her senses so hopefully that indicates that her head injury isn't too severe.0 -

I haven't - thanks for the recommendation! I've been looking for a book to read while having a cheeky glass of wine while waiting for OH to finish work!0 -

Thank you too for the recommendations. I've not read any of them, not sure about my wife. I shall have a perusal!

I'm going to have a read through synopsis and see what I think she might like.0 -
I was thinking to myself if | was in hospital what I would like to have to hand.
My own clothes. Comb or brush, tissues, lip-salve, plus my usual toiletries. Music player to listen to, magazines or paper to read so I don't have to tax my brain and are easy to pick up and dip into. Water and cordial to make to hospital water taste palatable.
Grapes

Hopefully she'll be discharged before the end of the week and fortunately I'll be doing all my work from home for the next couple of weeks anyway, so I can look after her.
Anyway, why am I sharing this with you?
I was wondering if you could give me a list of popular books (fantasy and drama preferable - no romantic Mills & Boon type slush please) that I could download on to a Kindle for her please? And perhaps any other suggestions on how to keep her entertained bearing in mind she can only use one arm (minds out of the gutter please)?
Any ideas for making her feel more comfortable and happy I can steal are also welcomed
Oh I feel for her. I have had two accidents which put together had similar results so I know she must be feeling pretty awful.
I found the broken arm so frastrating, I am very independent and needed help but didn't welcome it, well I did at first but as the weeks went by I found it hard. Poor husband couldn't win so you might need to tread carefully unless she is a saint
When you go back to work you might need to think about how she will manage for food. I was amazed at how fast a slice of toast could travel round the work top when I tried to butter it one handed.
I missed being able to relax in the bath because of trying to keep the cast dry but I found out later that you can buy covers that keep them dry, I used to wrap mine up in a bin bag but had to be careful not to lie down to far as the water would get in.
The questions about how she looks are a bit of a minefield as I would ask how I looked, bloody awful, and be told I looked fine and sometimes it would annoy me because I knew I didn't but I would probably have been equally unhappy to be told how I really looked. Even having been there I can't suggest anything other than play it by ear, if she feels patronised with being told she looks fine then maybe a positive "well the bruising is still there but it is fading and I bet it will be perfect in a week." Fingers crossed for her.
Books are so personal but I am going through a John Grisham phase, I get quite involved so might be good for distraction.
I think she needs a bit of TLC and you sound like the man for the job. Good luck and it does pass, I can laugh about it now especially the sympathetic looks I got in the supermarket and the daggers DH got from people who obviously thought I was a battered wife (that was when I hit my head and was badly bruised in the face)
Just realised John Grisham writes about legal cases, crimes mis carriage of justice etc, might not be her cup of tea but I borrowed one on holiday when I had finished my books and found I really enjoyed them.Sell £1500
