Great start to married life. New wife in hospital.

Yes, after a wonderful holiday we've returned to England and my now-wife has landed herself in hospital. It seems on her first day back to work she slipped outside her offices, fell backwards awkwardly, dislocating her leg, breaking her arm and wrist and her head went into a window.

Hopefully she'll be discharged before the end of the week and fortunately I'll be doing all my work from home for the next couple of weeks anyway, so I can look after her.

Anyway, why am I sharing this with you?

I was wondering if you could give me a list of popular books (fantasy and drama preferable - no romantic Mills & Boon type slush please) that I could download on to a Kindle for her please? And perhaps any other suggestions on how to keep her entertained bearing in mind she can only use one arm (minds out of the gutter please)?

Any ideas for making her feel more comfortable and happy I can steal are also welcomed :)

My favourite book of all time is Becoming Madam Mao by Anchee Min. I was absolutely hooked. Not sure if it's on Kindle as I had a paper copy, but highly recommended.

There is a book by Jo Jo Moyes called Me Before You which is really good. If you want really dark crime drama try Into The Darkest Corner, or Gone Girl. I've just read a delightful book called Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure which is the follow up to Chocolat and I really enjoyed that. Also for a good read The Help, The Snow Child, Shantaram, A Street Cat Called Bob.

Aren't you a sweetie! Does she like beauty treatments? If her face is accessible (ie, not covered in bandage!) she might like a facial at home if you can get hold of a mobile beauty therapist. That's what I'd like. Something to make me feel better about myself.

I'd also like anything that takes away things I might stress about. If she worries about the house being tidy, for example, make sure you tell her that you'll deal with it and clear things up for her etc.

It's not drama or fantasy, but I really like Bill Bryson's books. 'Down Under' is particularly brilliantly funny.

Congratulations on getting married. At least she didn't do this on the first day of your honeymoon...

Has she read the game of thrones books? They are by george rr martin and I really enjoyed them, and they are available on kindle. Scarlett Thomas the end of mr y (though that is an odd one) all the terry pratchett discworld novels are available and there's over 40 of those assuming she hasnt read them already :)

I like stephen king, and his books are quite long although some are a bit scary. 11/22/63 is very good, so is Duma Key, and his son joe hill has released a book called NOS4R2.

Also, of course, Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice is always a firm favourite, slight tang of eroticism though, but it's mostly inferred not actual, certainly vanilla compared to some of her other books!!

My fave ever book is Replay by Ken Grimwood. I fail to see how anyone wouldn't like it :D

No idea if it's available on kindle though...

Can you play a board game with her? A jigsaw for her maybe? Things I like, but appreciate not everyone does lol!

Is there a TV where she's resting with a DVD player? Maybe a box set of her favourite series, or a series she's been dying to watch? Or if you have Netflix get that set up where she can see?

Thanks for the bountiful suggestions. I shall browse the synopsis' of all of them and see what might be her cup of tea.

She's got some stitches in her head at the moment but I suppose when they're healed up some sort of beauty/pampering thing might be nice for her. Until then I shall make sure I answer her nine questions an hour on how she looks in the positive! :)

Fortunately, we have a cleaner who sorts the house out because I am rubbish at cleaning.

And thanks for the suggestions. I'm adding them all to a list.

We both watch the Game of Thrones series on TV. I do know the books are slightly different to the TV show so I could possibly get hold of the first three (I know she'll refuse to read the fourth book - spoilers for the TV show) but I'm not sure whether she'd read them as she's seen the TV show. Could just get the first one, only out a fiver if she doesn't want to read it.

I don't think she's ever read any Discworld novels, at least she's never mentioned it. Thanks!
