I think it's going to be funny when StudentPhil gets a job (those I presume he will change his name to WorkerPhil?), and screws up big time then comes here to whine about how unfair it was and it wasn't his fault (obviously it was because the world is unfair and because a butterfly farted in china and a hamster died in Papa new guinea).

    Nothing is ever his fault.

Nowt wrong with getting a Desmond (Tutu). I got one myself and it never held me back!

I'm now Head of Fries at the large McDonalds in Manchester. Eventually, if I keep my nose clean, I may even end up Head of Big Macs. That's when the real money comes rolling in, then come the babes.

Oh yeah. You know it.

I'm in bed with a stinker of a cold. I had to work today because if I don't work, I don't get paid.

Not much happening in MSE land tonight is there?

I worked hard, got a 2:2 and I've done very nicely thank you.:D

It is not only the qualification level that employers look for, it is common sense, personality, lots of things. If they interview someone with a first that they don't think will fit in with the organisation, then they interview someone with a 2:1 or 2:2 who they think will, they will take them.

My OH got a pass degree and he has also done very well as an engineer. He now makes the decision as to who gets the job!

that's all good and well but there's so many degrees available now that don't lead anywhere specifically and are only used to illustrate that you have a certian level of intelligence, it's in these degrees that you need to get a first or a 2:1 otherwise you'll find it hard to even get an interview at most places.

  • I think for SP to do a Masters with a 2:2 is only delaying the inevitable - low-paid employent or unemployment. I'm sure some of you think he's had everything provided on a plate and is arrogant for not taking a burger flippin' job. Some of you probably resent him having worked for where you're at today. But whilst providing some insight you miss the point. It's even harder for him; I'm sure he much prefers he was you. His predicament means (1) By all accounts the only thing missing from his CV is experience and (2) The only reason he's not taking a low-paid McD's job is he KNOWS (pessimistic or not) that he lacks the skills to progress anywhere and thus its equal with "giving up". Just cause you know someone who started low doesnt make it commonplace in fact it's increasingly rare. Further, the problem is exacerbated by (3) a failure to envisage how a low-paid job is merely a pathway in a much bigger picture and may itself open gateway for both educational, social and personal development pathways. For without experience, a graduate job is not forthcoming.

This whole situation has MADE him depressed much like the mention of self fulfilling prophecy. He is smart enough to know intuitively what he lacks but is still intensely frustrated at how other (probably with lesser CVs than himself) people can manage to suceed to respected jobs with apparent ease.

I think it's fair to say SP exhibits quite a few symptons of Aspergers syndrome, depression and dare I say it manipulative tendencies..when it comes to reasons why he can't do a particular job. I'm averse to giving labels to everything these days though and it may be mild-to-moderate Aspergers. The ability to see the full picture is a lesser mentioned textbook sympton but easily deducable Aspergers feature. I dont need to explain the motor movements, bullying, impaired social contact etc.

The problem is only compounded with far too many graduates for too few jobs. A lot of things have clearly conspired against him in a downward spirall and put him in a situation very few of you would find easy to get out of in his shoes.

You should remember that success is individually something very subjective. Mixing someone like the poster with McDonalds staff just won't work. And he knows that too. Thus he needs to find some sort of admin/office job.

I'm sure whoever helped him with his C.V. on here will testify unlike some people who you "don't know how they got the job!" he'd probably be intellectually - at least - superior. A 2:2 in his situation or via a bad choice of subject for his poor English is probably a 2:1 anywhere else.

My honest advice is do the Masters but force yourself to do some menial work during it. Then you'll be infinitely more employable and a good asset.

PS Would you have worked if you didn't have to like SP with his parents (probably only doing their best by him) funding? Think of the position he could have been in with a job on top of this money, deposit on first flat, car, anything. But his low self-worth means he wouldn't have spent it & hoarded it for now..or would he ;)

Student Phil - If you "only" get a 2:2 and you have put in a lot of work, then that is your level. It means that is the level of your academic ability. You seem to somehow be implicating that you are hard done by in some way or another, and unable to accept that perhaps a 2:1 is beyond your capabilities.
Grow up and get on with it.....some of us have had to overcome huge obstacles to get our degrees - have you?
