No please don't, one suicidal graduate is plenty:rolleyes: only joking SP has now cheered up, he has a happy thread in the Arms.:T

Give it two pages ;) :rotfl:

I'm incensed by this thread. Here we have a whingeing, shiftless young man (boy more exactly), who is disgracing all those students who work hard at their course AND hold down jobs to pay their way.

The lack of logic in his posts and his unwillingness to understand, let alone accept, his responsibility for his life, only add to the feeling that certain persons should NOT be admitted to university because they just don't cut the mustard.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

What you have to understand is that my family were told that I would be educationally backward and I would probably have no quality of life when I was younger and if I ended up in some really low level job then it would make their greatest fears come true that I am useless.

I was always told at school I was stupid and not to bother with uni. It made me more determined, i now have both a degree and a masters (I did the masters while working full time to fund it). Only a 2:2 in the degree. I don't care. I achieved what I set out to do.

Don't use either for my job, and other people I know get paid far more than me, but I enjoy my work. I go home happy, challenged and contented.

At the end of the day i would rather be in an interesting low paid job, than a high paid job i hated. You need a reason to get out of bed.

And as for waiting for your high paid job to come along, have you ever thought that any job on your CV is better than no job on your CV. The longer that gap is there the harder it will be to get a job, as employers will start to wonder why you have not been working, and think there is a reason for it

    Also people plato

Not gone through all of this thread, just had a quick read because it was on the first page, and I don't really want to get into the debate.. but this made me giggle.. in the context of a philosophy degree... ;)

  • Student Phil stop whinging, either you are taking the p*ss or you are seriously disturbed, either way you need to get a life! I’m sorry if it is harsh but it’s true. You haven’t even found out what you have got yet! I have suffered from depression over the years but I didn’t wallow in self pity like you are, and have managed to come out with a 2-1 with hard work and determination. The comment you made basically saying people “who are far less intelligent than (you) can get degree” is absurd. Those getting a better class than you either means 1) they have worked a harder and/or 2) they are more intelligent that you. Its not rocket science is it?? Now stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something about your life!!

Actually going on one point that Student Phil made about being told youd be useless.

When I was coming to pick my GCSE's my art teacher told me not to take art. That I would fail the GCSE and wouldnt do anything creative with my life. I was heartbroken, I loved art! Although I couldnt draw to save my life, I loved being creative.

So I went down the computers route, went onto a computer course after my GCSE's and was bored senseless. I then looked back at any projects I had done in school that I enjoyed and found a magazine project. So I took this into the local art college and got their opinion.

I started a printing and design course and finished with top marks. I then moved into the university across the road and have started a degree in graphic design. Last year I won the universities designer of the year award.

And to make it even better my art teacher was there a few weeks after giving some kids a tour. He remembered me and seemed shocked that I was in the art college. I explained what course I was on and he took pity! Said that he hoped I was managing. Cue my course tutor who knew what my art teacher had said to come up and ask "So where are you keeping your trophy?".

My art teacher asked what trophy he was talking about and my tutor said "Your looking at the universities design student of the year! And to think this girl was told shed never do anything creative by an old art teacher! Some teachers just dont know what theyre talking about!"

Cue art teacher to go very red, mumble some congratulations and walk off.

Ignore what people tell you, go for what you know you can achieve!

i have dyslexia and dyspraxia, i couldn't read until i was eight and all fo my primary school teachers told my parents i was thick, i was made homeless after my first year, i have OCD and bouts of reactive depression and anxeity, i lost one of my best friends to a house fire in the middle of my 3rd year and GUESS WHAT?

I just got a 2:1 in Creative Writing and Writing for Stage, Screen and Radio and a governers prize and i'm going to do a PGCE in Adult Literacy in september. (In addition to setting up and running my own business from last July.)

  • I think that if I ever met SP, i think i'd want to hit him. Not that I really believe he exists - he's some unethical sociology student digital creation. whine whine whine ... boo, my life is crap, I'm gonna get a 2:2 and my life will be ruined because no one will give me a job

Change the record Phil. I was told at the tender age of 11 that I would never pass my science GCSE... 12 years later I'm giving a science lecture at Cardiff university to Masters students and working with world class scientists. Not bad for a boy with a 2:2. So many people have stories like this. Grow some balls and you might have some stories yourself

I have struggling with physical problems and was in the bottom sets at school and I battled my way up and got good grades at school. I have always found language a great weakness. I just did the wong thing in picking a degree that demands high level English as I do find language and spelling very hard. I have had very little support during my degree and considering I have come further educationally than I could ever really have hoped any degree will be a huge achievement. Okay not as good as getting the College award but still a great achievement to me.

I have talked to my parents about my lack of freedom and social life. They agree that it is not that great and I should work on it.
