I'd love a mummy's boy right now! He is great when it's just me and him but then dad walks in and he's straight over to him and favours him for sure. The bizarre thing is when I drop him at nursery he cries and really really wants me but if oh drops him he's not fussed. If we ever drop him together or pick him up together it's me he comes to so he must love me too!

Congrats on lo walking benice. I love it most of the time as my arms get a break!
  • yes my arms are really toned now!

I have a question about craft stuff. At what age did you get craft stuff and what did you get? LO does painting at nursery but I dread the mess. OH has just painted hallway cream so I need something that can be wiped off walls :rotfl:

*Cracks knuckles and delurks for some craft speak* :D

Craft stuff doesn't have to be messy and can use a lot of what you have around. I have a massive craft stash which I have been hoarding for years so have lots of random bits but you can easily build up quite a versatile kit. Yo's three now and loves it but hes been doing it at nursery since starting.

If you are starting from scratch I would get -
    a pack of coloured paper
sticky stuff - double sided sticky tape, pritt stick, and if possible glue dots
    some googly eyes
    stickers (any and all)
colours - felt pens are good

from that you can make loads of things!

The last few things we made were:
Hedgehogs - cardboard cut into a hedgehog shape, Yo cut up strips of brown paper into pieces (can be ripped). He coloured in the face, prit-sticked the body and then stuck the paper bits on for spikes and then we did the googly eye (I love glue dots for this bit)
bird - Used the cardboard bit that pops out of the tissue box, covered in prittstick - stuck down a bag of coloured feathers that have been stuck in the cupboard for about 15 yrs, added a beak and googly eyes and it was done :-)
cat - wrapped some paper around a loo roll and then sellotaped on some pipe cleaners for whiskers, added eyes and was done.

I put him in his highchair seat at the table - if you do that every time then they accept that that is where the crafting happens and it minimizes the mess. Pop a mat on the table and its easy to clean.

*PVA does come out for some stuff but I tend to have control of that one :-)
*if you're bothered about mess avoid glitter at all costs

His artwork is stuck up in his room and he is very proud of it :-)
Its also a nice activity to do and it is an exercise in compromise and self control as their "art" goes completely off-piste to what is in your head or how you would do it!! (it can be really frustrating when they put the eyes on wonky!).

Painting is always a disaster as he always goes for the black and it can be messy!

    Hope that helps!

    Enjoy!

btw - Pinterest can be good for ideas and tutorial :-)

I got craft stuff at about 12 months. We have paint /felt tips /crayons/chalk/chalk board/poms poms/prit stick. I got a big roll of lining paper from b&q that he paints on and he has a thomas pinny to minimise mess!

On pin interest I saw the idea of putting lo in an open box and letting him colour around himself but not had chance to do it yet. Thought it was a good idea though!

We have an aqua doodle when I can't be bothered clearing up!

I bought this to get us started with arts and crafts, although you need extra glue. Red Ted Art is great for inspiration - they also do a brilliant weekly (free) e-newsletter :) She sits in the highchair to contain the chaos, and wears this when we do messy stuff.

Her absolute favourite thing is playdough though - you can make your own, but we have Soft Stuff from ELC.

    We made this hedgehog :)
  • We love arts and crafts here too. We have a huge box of bits and pieces and chuck anything in. Old loo roll/kitchen roll tubes, bits of silver foil, his old magazines....He likes to cut bits out and make collages. We make little animals and flowers...anything really. He always sits at the table and we have never had an issue of him getting down. For Christmas we bought a huge roll of brown paper and let him colour, paint and hand and foot print it and used it as wrapping paper for his gifts to grand/god parents.

In summer I have also had an old roll of wallpaper and put it outside with the paints. Chalk is also good fun in the summer outside. Maybe not summer but warmer than the torrential rain we have here at the mo.

I think it's a lovely activity as my LO really concentrates and I think it's really special bonding time :) he puts his creations on the fridge and then we talk about them when we are doing bits in the kitchen.

Thanks for the craft inspiration/ encouragement - just made some play dough ( with this recipe http://mylittlebabog.com/2015/01/05/homemade-playdough-recipe/ ) and going to buy some chunky crayons.

Baby turns one in 10 days, feels surreal!

  • I should really start to make these http://www.mumofboys.co.uk/easy-salt-dough-tree-decorations/ ! salt dough hand and footprints should looks so cute as you look back!

We went to Eureka in Halifax today as you get a annual pass for the same price as a ticket and it's only 7 miles away. There's a craft section in there that we can go to. LO liked pushing the kiddy trolley in the pretend M&S, bless him the trolley was still too big for him!
