Sammie more is a useful sign! I must start baby sign soon but I'm so tired right now. the baby sign book I have says to start with milk, food and more.

Nutella randomness is very cute. I've been waiting for the mothercars sale too for nice vests - I find the stuff with printed on patterns and logos tend to fade but mothercare tends to have embroidery or patterns dyed into the fabric.
  • Sorry just popping on quickly as I'm a bit worried.

My lo has been ill for weeks now, he's having stomach problems resulting in lots of runny nappies and awful smelly wind. We've been back and forth to doctors, health visitors, hospital etc but no one can find anything wrong and all tests are clear.

Anyway that's not really my issue. Lo is blw and now 8 months old, he's taken to blw really well and will give anything a try. The latest dr I saw was asking about his eating and drinking and what he has for meals. When I mentioned lo has started eating sandwiches at lunch the dr started pulling faces, shaking her head and telling me I am feeding my child totally unsuitable foods, with no nutrients and his meals should be pur!ed fruit/veg.

I was totally shocked as I've never had anyone professional question me before. Actually it really upset me and I just wanted to cry. My kind went totally blank and I didn't get around to mentioning all the other foods he has.

I am so angry for being judged to be a bad mother who has no idea how to feed a child. Then when she found out my lo isn't on 3 set meals and 3 bottles a day the faces and head shaking continued. Lo is gaining weight well and I'm not bothered that he has more milk than he should do as I am totally baby led and feed milk and food on demand.

The dr was trying to blame my style of weaning as the cause of his diarrhoea but I know this isn't the case as whilst he's been ill he's refused solids and he hasn't got better. I also fail to see how feeding him 3 x meals of pur!ed fruit/veg provides all the nutrients he needs considering the low calorie content! (I'm not against pur!e by the way but my lo refuses it anyway and I just can't see how he could eat enough of it to result in a much lower milk intake) He doesn't have loads of mill either, between 15-25oz a day but will only have 3-5oz at a time.

I'm sorry this is long but it's really thrown me and made me question myself. Also I've just found out we will be getting a visit from the health visitor this week and I'm paranoid that the dr has reported me as it seems a massive coincidence. It's all got me really worried :(

Oh WOAD, that sounds awful. You always believe you're doing right for your baby, unnecessary judgement is not welcome!
If it helps BLW was the weaning way recommended by our health visitors at the baby weaning talk given by the local surestart. It may be a regional thing, but seemed to me to be the NHS recommended way now. I know what it's like when you're on the spot, maybe the GP didn't appreciate your LO also eats plenty of fruit and veg (albeit not mashed up) and not just sandwiches (did they maybe get the wrong end of the stick and think you were just buying ready made supermarket sandwiches to feed him?) .
I would suggest that the HV "popping in" is probably conicidence as they do need to do another check up between 9-12 months, so maybe just a bit early. However I would suggest keep a diary of all the food and feeds he has for the next few days. It will work to show you're seriou about getting to the bottom of his stomach issues (is he always having gluten at a certain time and bad after that?) and also to prove that you are giving him a variety of foods. At nursery they record what food is offered at snacks, lunch, dinner and then either write "I ate it all" (the most common comment for our greedy monkey!) or I ate the crackerbread / cucumber etc. T doesn't eat pureed food, but he will eat an Ella's Kitchen fruit smoothie pouch if I feel he's been a bit stubborn with his 5 a day. By then recording the amounts of feeds and when you can show you're on top of that too.
GP's are a bit out of touch, my friend's LO had sickness and diarrhoea for a week, so took her to get checked out. The GP asked what sort of food they were pureeing for her and was taken aback when she said she just eats the same as them... her LO was 19 months!!!!
Try to stay clam with the HV, they are genuinely there to help you (although I did have one who I'm convinced could smell fear!?!?) but BLW isn't as eccentric as it was thought to be 5 years ago. It is a recognised weaning method and you shouldn't be ashamed of using that technique. I do hope LO starts to get better soon.

What a horrible Dr. I'd ignore him/her WOAD and request another opinion. DS certainly never got a bad tummy from blw.
Lawrence's idea of a food journal is a good idea. Do one for a week.

    Gotta go....

    And I'm back.

I think a food diary for a week is a good idea because the hv's here look at how the kids eat over a week rather than day by day.

Some, ok a lot of people are completely clueless about blw. They basically formed an opinion when mush was the only thing suggested and can't wrap their head around anything different. Just my opinion ;) my MIL is a classic example.

    Evening all.

Thanks for the link to mothercare, going to have a nosey after replying as we're off to Australia over the summer but of course it is winter for them (not really, I now know what a real winter is, hahaha) so need to pack a variety of clothes for lo.

Nutella - I love the new randomness sentence. LO has just started saying 'gaga' so my OH keeps replying with 'dada' to her, lol.

Re sandwiches well my LO is 9mths old on Saturday and she's had sandwiches in the past. Ages ago I went on a picnic with my antenatal friends and they all gave their LO sandwiches with cheese spread on.

Yes I've noticed at nursery that they give veg and fruit for lunch and tea, today LO had potato, mushroom and sweet potato with banana for afters. Then she had cheesy mash and apple for her tea. I'm not like that at home, she's had cheesy pasta with no veg mixed in before for her tea.

In terms of milk at the moment LO has: 5oz when she wakes up, 2oz mid morning, 4oz late afternoon and 4oz before bed. If I make up more I just waste it, she used to have 6oz when she woke up and a 4oz mid morning but I was throwing it away so I reduced what I made up.

I asked a health visitor when I last got her weighed re the milk and if I needed to give her a multi vitamin but she said no, she would be getting what she needs from her food and milk intake.

This new fangled BLW is what they used to do before everyone got het up about babies needing everything pureed! Things go in cycles. Unfortunately the generation above us turned everything to mush so we are the weirdos!

WOAD you are doing brilliantly by your baby, do not let that dr tell you rubbish like giving puree fruit is going to solve the problems. The food diary is an awesome idea, gives you something to show the HV if they do want to talk about how food is going.

I had an amazing HV today - my little man has dropped a line on their charts. She asked if he was still bf, if he was content after feeds and if he did plenty of wet and dirty nappies, then said he's obviously long and lean and looks happy and healthy, so looking at the baby as a whole all is fine!

  • WOAD that's awful! it must have been really awful coming from a health professional too *hugs* A food diary does sound good - there are so many allergies and intolerances!
I decided to relax a bit and give LO some processed 'junk' food like dairylea, cake, crisps and ice cream and his poo has been runnier plus he seems to have less interest in food! it could just be coincidence but he's back on the healthy stuff now.

Ahh thanks, I can see so many positives now so worrying a lot less about the future and enjoying watching him grow.

We are off to Spain at the end of July. Looking forward to it. :)
How's Aiden getting on? I can't believe they are nearly 2 1/2, are they even classed as toddlers anymore or just small men?
