Kat, I thought of you yesterday when I saw a woman wearing your brown sandals. She had dark red polish on her toes and they looked really cool. Much trendier and attractive than the photo. Hers were a size 8 (yeah, I got into a conversation with her about them) and she said they're really comfortable. Having seen them in person, I'd say any colour would look great!

What was the colour of the multi-way dress you bought?

Oh, and talking of Japan...I had a 7 day rail pass there many years ago and the place was so expensive that my friend and I would get a long slow train to somewhere and then get the train straight back so that we could save on accommodation!

I love your idea of cooking courses as you travel! You inspired me (as always!!) to look at some interesting courses in London. Not quite as glamorous, but definitely a lot of fun :)
  • Applemuncher you are right and it's just one more thing I am grappling with. The Osprey just doesn't look as though it could take a bashing like the Caribee but the Caribee is a little too big for my liking. I am going to go to Blacks or Cotswold's to try on the Osprey one and see how small it really is but I am considering taking a sleeping bag ( very thin ) as I have a thing about cleanliness (and a silk liner ) so the added space might be worthwhile.

Siouxsie I got a black dress to be safe. They were doing a $30 reduction and I purchased it to save the pennies - shoulda got a brighter colour but it will at least go with everything. The light/blue grey colour would go with more - the idea of white sandals creeps me out a little - otherwise I should just get the red ones..... more dilemmas.. lol!

Haha! 82 days for me then!

Just looked at that rucksack. Never considered a Vango rucksack although I would love a Vango tent.... will check out the reviews on it though! It's 80L altogether though isn't it?.. 60l for the main compartment and a small 20l attached..? Thats a lot of space... And it's 3.14KG..?? Are you sure you want to settle on this and not the Osprey maybe..?

I want to get rid of all my "extras" in the house before I get my rucksack - have you seen the Caribee Mallorca 70L - only downside is the weight @ just over 2KG but the material is reinforced, the zips arr larger and stronger and it has an inbuilt rain cover (one less worry)... The Osprey Farpoint is under 1KG I think...

Yes I am sure it's hard being home with the parentals but needs must - what do they make of you packing away your life and heading off.....?

I can't wait to get home to Ireland on the 30th September for my month of relaxation!!!

I finish work in exactly 21 working days on the 12th September.

Osperys are way out of my price range Kat and tbh i wont be using the 20 day pack. The extra kilo or two doesnt bother me much ...im gonna pack super light ( she says :rotfl:) and im only doing thailand, cambodia laos, vietnham then OZ so not as much actual backpacking places as you . nothing like jungle trecks or anything just from one hostel to the next hehe i like the caribee but id rather one i can go and try on ...seems to only be only online stockists:( and its doubel price!

the parents are obvioulsy worried as im going solo but both of them said GO FOR IT straight away :beer:

    xx

  • If you have £10K in your bank account what is out of price range? - the Osprey are worth the money though for comfort. But I guess you gotta go with what you are comfortable with. I think I will end up with the Osprey 55L. It seems to offer everything apart from the built in rain cover... Grr! I need to sit down and work out positives and negatives though before making a decision..

How long will you be in Oz for?

There is a TK Maxx on my way home on the bike. Will check there today. Thank you for that. Such a good idea, never had one before but I hate getting a crik in my neck.. Brilliant!

Ah crap I didn't think of this!

You need to start calculating in dollars though. You have $16689.50 USD. Per month in SEA you will need at least $1000 - this leaves you with $12,690 dollars rounded up as you are hitting the other 4 countris right - Thailand / Laos / Cambodia and Vietnam?.....(As far as I remember you are not going to Myanmar which cuts out at least $1500 as it's a little more expensive)

    • NHS will provide tetanus, dyptheria, thyphoid, Hep A and Hep B for free,
    • You DO NOT need yellow fever (which is £75 saved )
    • Malaria tabbies are cheapest from The Travel Pharmacy that I know of and calculate the EXACT amount you need plus 9 days extra ( 2 before and 7 after the dates of being within malaria area)
    • Insurance only for the exact dates - This is a comparison I used although World Nomads might be the best for you and me.
    • Rabies (£165) is definitely needed.
    • Cholera you might get away without.
    • You will not need Japanese Encephalitis.
Accommodation is in the quote of $1000 per month as is food. Please forgive me if this is a patronizing spiel but I really want to help you get to Oz...

You know what bag you want so that's sorted (£70?).

I am not bringing hiking shoes but got a hybrid runner/trail shoe but many are on sale now, minimal clothing as you know you can get anything over there unless you are like me at 5'8" and a large rear end that no Asian market will cater for (:rotfl:)...

Laundry is cheap, bring tops from Primark etc..

So that is about $2500 / £1500 roughly....

You still have $10000 USD left.... this is $10700 AUS..

That's a LOT left over..? Flights to Aus from Bangkok are CHEAP at the moment so you "could" if you really want to get there book your flight now..? Try Momondo....... And book your flight home - then make whatever you have left last. You are too close to Oz from Bangkok NOT to go so even for a month to see family who will look after you it will be worth it.

    Howz that then eh??? :T:T:T:T:T:T
