  • I would also like to say - today at work is my second to last shift EVER in this place. It's been a LONG two years of wondering each month "will I / won't I" get the shifts I NEED to clear debt and then to save and here I am at the end with one more to go on the 31st and I have just about made it.

I worked here for 4-5 years... I left for 1 year for a mental break... then came back with a vengeance. And you know what it's like when you return to an old work place - it's not the same.... and yet I stuck at it.

Cannot wait to never step foot in here again. Honestly - you have no idea!!!

  • Hello Diary hunters and lurkers...

Having thoughts about money and needed to get said thoughts down on paper so to speak.... You are allowed to skip this part if you want. I don't mind. And you are allowed to make comments about appropriate spending/savings etc

So the Travel Fund stands as £6735.02. (This has dropped from a well rounded £7000 due to £250 worth of injections and ...ahem... £14.98 of iTunes music).

It was my intention at this stage to have £8000 in the account. :o

However, this did not take into consideration the extras that I would have had to have bought by now. So I have spent £2755 meaning I have exceeded my expected earnings and smashed through it I think. (£9490.02).

At the end of this month, considering I won't have to pay any rent as the LL said not to bother and he will class that as my deposit and only 3 weeks of travel into London I should have a well rounded £2000 with all the OT I have done to throw into my fund.... Which should then be sat at £9735.02.

This brings me to the beginning of September where I should be able to sell the motorbike - I am going with £1800 at the minute although £2000 is preferable I can't be too certain I will get that.

This "should" bring my total to £11,290 (minus the pence),

At the end of September I get a full months wage, the travel and extras associated with living in London will be obsolete as I will be on the ferry heading back to Ireland on the 30th which leaves me with "hopefully" another £2000 to put away with £150 going to my mother for the amount of food I will eat through out the month.

A further £1000 should follow in dribs and drabs from my last months wage being the week I am taking in annual leave (£586), tax return (£700?) and the last week of my rent which I am getting back as I am moving to my friends house and my LL told me he would give it back... (£87.50) = £1287.50

New Total - £14,577.50...... :T:T:T...(however being home in Ireland means meeting up with friends, using my local gym once or twice and eating out so there will be pennies for that which will more than likely be the rent return - £77.50 to keep things even. )

Now..... for how it will all get spent!.......

7000AUS into an account over there equals £3866.12 via MoneyCorp online who will directly transfer the GBP into my Oz account once it have been set up. It can be retrieved should I decid not to go. :)

£3000 will be set aside for a re-entry fee should I need to come back at all. I was thinking of a high interest account but need to find one that will accept that amount as an initial deposit as my bank seems to want £5000 and that's too much to leave behind.

Travel insurance, visa's, courier to Northern Ireland with all my stuff, money for rucksack and actual items like medications etc and malaria tablets and the taxi to Euston station will hit around £1300 as a maximum I think but I am giving it £1500 as I don't like surprises.

That leaves me with £10,000 or $16778 USD.

That is a lot of dollars!

At $30 a day, 31 days in a month (ish), I am looking at £930 a month per country. (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) which will equal = £4650 as a minimum.

    Japan needs $80 a day = $2400.

So basic living in each country EXCLUDING transport = =$7050.

Which is under half of what I will have available. Myanmar might cost a bit more if I really do stay a month though.Transport that I know of so far goes like this....

Train in Hanoi to Nanning then on to Shanghai - $200 (?)
Overnight stay in Shanghai (unavoidable) - unknown
Ferry to Japan - $195 (food is extra for two days while onbaord but minimal)
    21 day Japanese Rail Pass - $600

So - $1000, leaving my new total still under half of what I have available at $8050 with $8728 remaining.

Although am sure I am missing something here. Excursions obviously will start costing more with my cooking class @ $500, visas inbetween countries as I am only get a Thai visa before I leave (maybe), a deep sea diving course and the motorbike riding... About $1500?

I am still walking away with $7228

Which is where Japan will eat up much of my money if I am not careful although the costings above covers adequate lodgings, travel and food. There is nothing I really want to "do" so to speak in Japan - just eat - so unsure where else my money will go.

A flight to Oz might hit me at around $500. But I don't want to be scrimping all the time considering how much I have worked to get to this position. I also don't want to splurge because I might not earn as much as I think I will in Oz or get a job as fast as I think I might - I am giving it 3 months - so I need to prepare.

So there you go - thoughts, advice, tips and tricks welcome....

  • Malaria Tabbies purchased.

£195 down from what I thought would be £260.

Turns out you don't need them in Japan at all.

    Whoop!

Hi Kat great to see your planning is goign well.
can i ask what malaira tablets you went for and who you purchased them from?

Bag wise I think im certain on the vango freedom 60l due to good reviews and constant reccomendations

Im in the middle of moving out so the past few weeks have been major stress. Move back in with the family on monday... which means £70 a week travel commute to work but i had no choice no friends could put me up and i couldnt find any short term lets so home it is! I worked out i should still save alot of money as my half of the rent alone smack bang in the middle of Liverpool city centre was £305 ... plus all bills and tempation to go out eat out etc

I finish work on October 24th...having 3 days leave left to take or they will pay me .... so im hoping not to need to use them for a bit of extra money.

    83 days to go!

    xx

  • Haha! 82 days for me then!

Just looked at that rucksack. Never considered a Vango rucksack although I would love a Vango tent.... will check out the reviews on it though! It's 80L altogether though isn't it?.. 60l for the main compartment and a small 20l attached..? Thats a lot of space... And it's 3.14KG..?? Are you sure you want to settle on this and not the Osprey maybe..?

I want to get rid of all my "extras" in the house before I get my rucksack - have you seen the Caribee Mallorca 70L - only downside is the weight @ just over 2KG but the material is reinforced, the zips arr larger and stronger and it has an inbuilt rain cover (one less worry)... The Osprey Farpoint is under 1KG I think...

Yes I am sure it's hard being home with the parentals but needs must - what do they make of you packing away your life and heading off.....?

I can't wait to get home to Ireland on the 30th September for my month of relaxation!!!

I finish work in exactly 21 working days on the 12th September.

I know that the weight of the rucksack is super important - but you plan to be living out of it for a few years, no? So durability may be better with the extra kilo...? May well be talking poppyc0ck here, so feel free to ignore...
