RE: non-MSE Princess Kate telling the world she is pregnant at less than 12 weeks - this just brings up the whole debate again about waiting for 12 weeks to tell people! If it's good enough for the Princess...
I think that as your chances of miscarriage go down significantly once youve seen the heartbeat on a monitor, that after ive had an ultrasound i will feel comfortable telling people - therefore, nothing really to do with 12 weeks. Not telling anyone until 12 weeks i think stems from not having your first NHS ultrasound till 12 weeks. Like peopole in the USA are much more relaxed and tell people sooner but they have their scans a lot sooner than us.
As the cheapest private scan where i live is £95, im not paying to have one just to put my mind at rest (my MSE ways coming through there). But i imagine Kate can have as many scans as she likes and has already seen baby and its heart so miscarriage chances are less than someone like me who hasnt had a scan or seen a doc or midwife.
Though i imaine she would have like to have kept it a secret for as long as she could as so much of her luife is all over the newspapers and they dont get much privacy. ITs a shame it cant be kept within the family at least for a few weeks.0 -
Hi Tilly! Was only just thinking we hadn't heard from you for a while, hope you're ok
Jovie, hope the bleeding has eased off and you've managed to get in to see a doc.
Ooooooh I'm very excited about the new royal playmate that this bubbas gonna have, I'm gonna need to improve my social standing though if I want any play dates! :rotfl:
Have to say I'm not keen on a home birth, I think I need the reassurance of hospital esp as ds was 5 weeks early and had a low birth weight. We had practically the whole ward on standby whilst I was in labour as they were very worried ds wouldn't be breathing when born and/or have organ damage. Thankfully he was fine but I don't think I would have dealt with that very well at home. And don't get me started on the mess.........!!
I'm 'officially' 12 weeks this week but I'm gonna stay on this board until my scan nxt Thursday if you lovely lot will let me overstay my welcome!0 -
Hi Tilly
Good news about your scan, it must make everything seem so much more real! I really can't remember when I started listening to the CD, probably from around 5months or so is a good time, although even if it's only for the last few weeks it will still help a little. It's really just about relaxing, and not being afraid of the labour, sort of "stepping back and letting your body do what it needs to do" kinda thing. Fear is a big factor in pain and how you cope with it - pain is normally our body's way of alerting us to something wrong, but the book/CD tries to change your attitude to childbirth pain and think of it in a different way, to try and distance yourself from it and pass the time during contractions, then relax between them. I was humming for a lot of my labour apparently, though this is what the MW's and OH said - I don't remember!
For proper "Hypnobirthing" you are supposed to take the classes, but I didn't think they were necessary (and had no access to them anyway!) I also read books on natural childbirth, such as "Childbirth Without Fear" by Grantly !!!!!! Read (a little old fashioned but much of it was reassuring), and a few others that I can't remember the names of and have lent out to others.
Thanks for thinking of me MissyMooI'm trying not to think about a scan too much yet, it will probably not be until October at least.
I'm around 9 weeks-ish and have told pretty much everyone. I didn't mean to really, but I didn't see the point in keeping it secret. We told the children yesterday, who got quite excited and seemed happy at the news. DS's respone was priceless, "Eeeeeeee!! I want a baby brother! Pass the pizza."

I've not mentioned anything at work yet as I've not yet had a hospital scan but will probably meet with her in the next few weeks. My HOD is lovely and I'm good friends with her so I know she won't have a problem, in fact my department as a whole will probably love it as it means they get more hours! We've got a couple of part-time staff who have had to have timetables made up with other subjects, so I'm hoping to come back part-time and then they can have some of my hours. I just hope there will still be enough for me in my subject, but that's a problem for another day.
Finally time to reply...
I don't often see the HT as the school is huge, so assumed I'd only have to notify my HOD.
I teach a subject where it is difficult to get replacements, and have FIVE GCSE classes, four of which are doing an exam next summer. Our HOD can be a little on the stroppy and rude side, so she is not going to be pleased.
I was also horrified to have one of my colleagues come up to me and tell me they'd heard about my 'news'. Given I told my HOD in confidence (she wanted to know why I needed a cover lesson), i am not impressed, but at least it made me feel a lot less guilty about needing maternity!
Oh well, at least i get to see the MW tomorrow and hopefully hear a heartbeat. I can't wait to find out if I'm 10 or 14 weeks - ive put 5 inches in my waist despite not eating any more/less, and my boobs seem to have doubled in size!
So many new people joining - we have all had a fun summer!! Am quite jealous of all those getting scans and scan dates. I am sure I'll get a date soon.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
hello everyone!
hope everyone is ok and able to cope with the various symptoms and situations they're in. Sorry I'm not doing personals, I just can't concentrate on what different people have said - but hugs to everyone anyway!!
AFM, I phoned the GP this morning to book an apt and the first available one is a week on Friday (the 19th!). I don't think I can wait that long.
I am still losing weight and still really struggling to eat and drink and I'm so tired. So far today I have drunk about 0.5 litres which is pathetic.
I think I'll have to get OH to phone first thing in the morning to get me a same-day emergency apt - I usually have my head in a bucket/down the toilet at that time so I can't really do it myself!
Still haven't heard from the midwife. (I'm 8+3)Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock0 -
Although I've graduated from this thread now I just thought I'd update regarding my late appointments.
As a recap:
I informed my doctors surgery I was pregnant at about 5 weeks. They told me to fill in a midwife registration form and return it, which I'd done by about 6 weeks.
My first midwife appointment came through and the earliest they could see me was at 11.5 weeks. At this point I was concerned it was cutting it a bit late for my first scan, so I arranged a private scan to happen at 11 weeks. At that point I discovered I was having twins!
Midwife appointment went well and she put the referral through to the hospital for my scan. My scan date came back for 14+2 and I had it yesterday.
The issue was that by this point it was too late to do the measurements for the Downs Syndrome screening, meaning we didn't have the option if we wanted to do it.
My advice to anyone in a similar position: if you think you might want to have the Downs screening and your appointments look to be running a bit late, consider a private scan at which you can get the measurements done. We didn't even think to ask about it at ours because we had no idea we might miss it with our first NHS scan.0 -
Pington, that's really good advice, thanks. I would be annoyed if I didn't get this screening due to the NHS being slow as I am older than most on here and really want it done, what dates does it have to be done, I thought it was 12 or 13 ??0
-
I didn't even think about Downs screening Pington - my dates are unsure, so I might already be 14+1, so would that be too late? (Am hoping I'm only 10+1!)
I'm nearly 35, so did want Downs screening!
Are there other tests they can do?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

Sorry you're still feeling so awful Aunty-Pickle. Def get OH to phone the gp 1st thing for you, I'm sure if you get seen there's lots they can do to relieve your symptoms. Fingers crossed they can see you tomorrow. x0
