Morning ladies!
Just wanted to join in, as like a lot of people on here it's just so hard at this stage as not telling people we are expecting our first is killing me! :rotfl:
A bit of background...
Wife and I (civil partners) have talked about having a baby for years but due to circumstances (mostly money) weren't in a position to undergo fertility treatment. Unfortunately our NHS trust don't fund same sex couples for fertility treatment so we've been busy saving.
After a successful PPI claim (which I wish we could've been bothered with earlier) and wife's DMP well and truly on the home straight (£30k+ of debt paid off over the last 7 years) we decided we'd have go at IUI and see what happened. With enough money saved for 3 rounds we were keeping our fingers crossed as success rate is approx 20%.
Well, amazingly after our first round we got a BFP 15 days after the procedure (tested early on days 8, 10 and 12 as couldn't wait!but remained positive that we could be lucky). I couldn't believe it when wifey came running down the hallway waving the pregnancy test!!!
The reality is slowly sinking in but I don't think either of us will be totally happy until we have our 7 week scan in a week and a half's time... we'll also find out if the second mature follicle that was present during our scans leading up to the insemination means we'll have double trouble on our hands - a frightening thought if I'm being totally honest but I'm sure we'll adapt!
Calculated due date is May 3rd 2015. :j0 -
That is wonderful news Downhillfast. Huge congratulations. It will take a while before it starts feeling real.
After your first round! AMAZING!!!!!!0 -
Thanks very much.
I wasn't expecting it to feel real for me straight away but it was quite bizarre realising that the wife (biological mother) hasn't really processed it yet either! I guess you don't think about these this until you are in the position.
We're both nervous that things haven't progressed and that there's nothing growing inside her... but she is definitely feeling some symptoms so hopefully that's a good sign - saying that though she felt quite nauseous the first week after finding out but not so much now...
Just got to keep everything crossed now and hope our scan reveals a heartbeat (or two  )0 -
Had my first appointment with my consultant today. It went really well. I explained that I'd had a bad experience last time and a bad start to this pregnancy and the consultant is putting steps in place to make sure it doesn't happen again which is reassuring.
I was also given more free healthy start vitimens. Is that normal now. It's great if it is! Last time I had to buy them from boots.
Big decision now is whether to have a planned c section or try for an pushing out birth. My consultant said it was up to me but I would have to be very specially monitored if I was having a push baby out birth and it could be dangerous. I've often felt sad not being able to share my birth story with other mums (it was the stuff of horrors)and it made me feel isolated at first. My husband very strongly feels that I should go for a section and stop being so self indulgenent.
Betti, did you have a csection with your first? I shared my story with some people but I didn't like to put pregnant women off and give them negative thoughts about labour. It's a difficult decision to make but I personally would always give natural labour a chance a long as I wasn't putting myself or baby at undue risk.:jMarried 16/07/2010, ds1 born 11/08/12, baby due 08/05/20150 -

Congratulations and I hope that scan comes around quickly. Is it normal procedure to scan more often with IUI pregnancies?
My sickness is on and off too and it worries me when it disappears even though it has nothing to do if the baby is healthy etc. I am not even 5 weeks yet and very inpatient, I can't remember being this impatient with my first.:jMarried 16/07/2010, ds1 born 11/08/12, baby due 08/05/20150 -

The clinic we used monitor the development of the follicles through the early part of the cycle... internal scans on days 8, 10 & 12. Once the follicles reach 18mm they're dreamed to be mature and ovulation likely very soon. An ovulation test then detected a surge so we were booked in for the procedure the following day.
As for the 7 week scan, although we haven't been told exactly why they scan so early, we suspect it may be down to the nature of most clients having fertility issues (we didn't but were just lacking one ovary and the necessary ingredient of sperm!). It may also be so that they can report the pregnancy to the sperm bank - we had to pay €1000 for what's called a pregnancy slot, as any one sperm donor can only provide children for 10 families in each EU country. This is partially refundable in the event of no pregnancy ie the slot can then go to someone else.0 -
Its common in the USA to have your first scan between 6-10 weeks. Though, the rest of Europe is similar to us and most countries do first scan 10-14 weeks.
At 7 weeks they should be able to hear a heart beat and once that has been seen/heard on an ultrasounds, your chances of miscarriage reduces a fair amount.
Also, you have a better chance of twins and the sooner you know that the better,0 -
I had fertility treatment too and as standard they scanned at 7wks.
At that point, if all looks well, you are discharged from their care and into the hands of the NHS.0 -
