Oh I really hope that you feel better soon. Like someone else said, make sure you factor in adequate sleep.

My OH was the same on his birthday, all he wanted in the end was a couple of pairs of jeans which I bought in the shop, even though I was planning on a few surprises! Oh well, as long as he is happy with his present from you!!

  • Ok so, with a little time to spare, here goes with the b fawlty weekend story. We arrived at approx 3.30, first check in was 3. We were greeted by a voice from the nether regions of the barn exclaiming how early we were. We were shown our room but were told we weren't getting keys as guests kept losing them. On initial inspection, the room was nice. A lot of the restoration had however been done by the owner and it showed. Poor finish, doors hung on the wrong side from light switches and the worst, a bathroom door that wouldn't close. Dinner was a set time and a set menu. Choice was take it or leave it. All guests were at 2 tables and these were a bit crapped. Cooking was good but some odd combinations on plates. I skipped the pea soup course totally. The afternoon and evening were punctuated with the sounds of sheep in labour. The lambs were delightful but....

There was no bar but an honesty book and a selection of bottles. I asked for a diet soft drink but was told that the owner objected on health grounds so none were stocked.
Each room had a bottle of water but no tea or coffee facilities. Breakfast was at 9.30 and contrary to the in room menu, had one format. I asked for a poached egg and was told that it should have been ordered the night before as all available eggs had been fried!

Oh oh and the largest towel in the bathroom was slightly larger than a hand towel.

    It truly was an experience.

  • :rotfl::rotfl:. It was certainly a far more original experience than a night in a Premi*r inn. I love that the owner objected to diet sodas, but was quite happy to leave the hard liquor lying around unsupervised. When are you going back!

  • So, update on money things. When we were away, OH and I did the money talk that extended to last weekend. Upshot is that we now have £8k in the emergency pot, £1k reserve pot in the current account with £5k set aside for essential work around the house. Any of this that isn't used, goes to the mortgage. The £8k is in the pot we were aiming to have at £5.3k but, it's an isa and earns 1.3% more in interest pa than our mortgage costs. On other matters, it's been a ridiculously spendy month and I'm expecting my next visa bill to be massive but I know where the money went and little of it was frivolous. On other matters, just weighed in and no weight loss or gain. And the bad news is that I've had to rearrange my blood test and it's been brought forward a week. I'm dreading it as I'm still not tackling the sugar issue and consequently feel like such a failure. I also sometimes feel that the house and the job, etc are just closing in on me. I really wish I could sort out my screwed up thinking and stop myself feeling like a failure and living in a self fulfilling prophesy.

    Hi INOD

You are NOT a failure. You've been concentrating on all things monetary, and have done a great job there.

Perhaps now it is time to put some of that energy to all things health related. Your blood test could be your bench-mark?

Sugar is sneaky, and can be found in such unexpected food items. For the initial period, I'd recommend cutting out not only obviously sugary foods, but also cereals, prepared foods, etc that have added sugar. I was diagnosed as diabetic 2 years ago, but through changing my eating habits I lost 1.5 stone and halved my blood sugar. Cutting carbs and increasing exercise was my secret.

In the last few months I've slipped, and some of the weight went back on, so I'm stepping up the exercise which was where I'd been slacking. This week I've lost 1.5 lbs which I'm delighted about - I just have to keep it up.

I'll be cheering you on, and know you can do whatever you put your mind to.

    Satchmo x

INOD you are doing brilliantly, you have no debts, are overpaying the mortgage, have savings () keep up a busy FT job, travel a fair bit, you're recovering from surgery. And that's just what I've picked up from the thread.

All that said, whilst I can't comment on weight loss, I know what you mean about things closing in on you. What's the house issue? Any specifics that the lovely people on here can support you with? Don't be beating yourself up with things - not everything gets solved at once. It'll come good. :)

    Hi INOD,

Really glad to hear the DH money issue is sorted, but sorry to hear that things are feeling very difficult. You are most definitely NOT a failure; you are sorting things out brilliant, under a lot of pressure, and are an inspiration to many. Please let us know if we can do anything to help on here.

    Sending positive wishes,

    Gib x

    Hi inod

I can only echo satchmo, mfmaybe and giblet's excellent advice and comments above. You mustn't beat yourself up - you are doing marvellously. OK you have a mortgage (most of us do on here), but you are paying this off religiously; you have an excellent emergency pot and funds set aside for your house repairs (which must only add to its value when completed) and the best thing of all - no great honking pile of unsecured debt (unlike me!).

You are naturally worrying about your blood test but Satchmo is spot on in her post so please take heed!

Your post re your weekend away had me in fits - Cold Comfort Farm indeed! Perhaps you should get your revenge on TripAdvisor...............:rotfl:

  • thanks so much you lot. i think the melt down was brought on by my mother. We've never had an easy relationship, I consistently disappoint her and nothing I do is ever good enough for her. I should know by now but still set myself up for a kicking. As some of you may know, next month I'm off to Toronto for my nephew's wedding with my OH. we're the only ones invited from a large connection which has already annoyed various family members. The thing is, when my nephew visits, he stays here, my siblings don't make an effort for him yet whinge that they aren't invited to the wedding. The exception to this exclusion is my mother, his grandmother. Now, at 83, she has decided that she will go to the wedding, will travel with us and will basically expect us to tend to her. Her mobility isn't good but she refuses to use her walking stick and everything has to be on her terms. she also plays silly games playing her children off against each other and fabricating conversations, comments, etc. i know i'm going to experience hell on earth as I don't want anything to spoil my nephew's big day. while the holiday wasn't of my choosing, i'm now totally dreading it. she's critical of everything from my being a pregnant teenager to me being the only family member with a broken marriage to my weight, my having worked despite having children, to me taking a holiday when i'm the only family member with a mortgage to my hair colour! I've had to deal with her over the travel arrangements and it's hard not to buy into the truth she pedals about me.

just need to try and focus on the positives. today i am grateful for
you peeps - such a lovely lovely bunch of people
