Christmas Day, open a card from a relative who often is very generous, me and OH get giftcard for wine, over the moon. She opens hers and there is a note inside saying said relative has donated all my sister's christmas money to the charity she has talked about running/climbing for. I thought she was going to cry.
:rotfl: That's funny!0 -
For years my sister in law has given my husband a box of shortbread for Christmas (usually the own brand, BOGOF variety but perfectly edible!).
The problem is that he suffers from inflammatory bowel disease, is on a very restricted special diet, and cannot eat white flour, white sugar or butter - the three ingredients of shortbread!
We tried giving her the same thing every year to see if she 'got the hint', but no. And she knows perfectly well about his illness, even suffered from it herself for a while!0 -
My increasingly eccentric mother (it's a family trait
) just loves giving and receiving practical gifts. This year, amongst other things, she gave us: a huge jar of OH's favourite coffee, a pair of jumbo bath towels and a black Ikea bog brush
It wasn't even meant as a joke :rotfl:
I keep reminding OH that there's every possibility I will become my mother :laugh:0 -
My Mum and I rang my aunt (her sister) to ask what she and her sons (my cousins) would like for Christmas while we were doing our shopping for the big day. My aunt specifically said 'wine or chocolate' for each of them. So we got them exactly that.
On the day, just before presents were swapped, my aunt let slip that my younger cosin doesn't drink alcohol at all!! Luckily Mum had something else she could give him, but I just had to hand over the bottle and hope he didn't feel too disappointed...
The top 'disappointing present' prize in my family has to go to my dad though. Years ago when him and Mum were still together, he bought her a bottle of 'Obsession' perfume. Mum wasn't really that happy about it, as it wasn't the kind of perfume she would normally wear. Nevertheless she graciously thanked him and wore it from time to time. My dad obviously thought he'd hit the gift giving jackpot though, because for every Christmas and birthday after that he bought her the same bloody perfume! No wonder they eventually divorced! :rotfl:

Jesus, you're nearly 32? You sound like a petulant 5 year-old reading this post. People were 'told' to 'specifically' choose from items on your pre-prepared list and not to deviate from it??! :rotfl:
I'd say you're lucky you got anything at all with such an attitude! Did you cry and stamp your feet when you opened those gifts that didn't correspond to your specific demands?!
I hope you're not passing your ungrateful, entitled attitude onto your child, although I guess you probably are as you talk about his best friend being 'so-called' because he/his parents dared to buy your son a gift that didn't match his exact wants/needs.
Apart from making my eyes hurt, your post also made me very sad that there are people out there who treat Christmas as an opportunity to milk their friends and family for material goods. People who also, if those goods offered don't meet their exacting demands, deride and complain about them. I really, really hope that none of my friends or family behave in such a poor manner over the gifts I gave them.
I have found people will buy for the sake of buying when it comes to christmas..... with very little thought and very little effort they will just pick any ol sodding thing..... Yes I had a list I would of appreciated anything if there was actually some thought put into but clearly there were very few..... and you have a bloody cheek to comment on my attitude perhaps if you understood my reasoning and actually had the full facts you wouldnt have been so quick to make your higher than mighty comments.... but thanks for that and I apologise for making your eyes hurt...... :cool:LOVE isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live WITHOUT0 -
Wasn't mine, but I did laugh. My sister is a particularly greedy, money-centered person and Christmas is the time of year where she rubs her hand in glee at all the free stuff she'll get, whilst totting up how much each person must've spent and then judging them accordingly.
She has been banging on constantly about doing supposed charity work, like runs or mountain climbing etc, but hasn't actually done anything and I would be very surprised if she ever, ever did anything.

Excellent, charity benefitted and sounds like it couldn't have benefited indirectly from such a 'lovely' person :rotfl:Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I gave my mum the cheapest present ever. I collected free gifts and samples including face cream, candles, coffee and a calender and popped them in a box and wrapped them. I told her it was the thought that counted and that they where 'priceless' gifts. She seemed quite happy with her pressy and she did get a real pressy too

Remember a lovingly wrapped xmas present some years ago from brother and his wife . It was a round wooden board with dried peas, lentils ,and pasta stuck on it, with home sweet home carved into it using a dull penknife.Unfortunately whoever had made it had then decided to drench board in mahogany varnish to make sure everything stayed stuck on ,the smell of varnish stayed on it for years and years.Still giggle when I think of it.Sill:rotfl:0
