Keep the £1 jar going even when things get tough, as sadly they probably will do. (sorry). But you will deserve a treat when you are fifty, you need something to look forward to. I have a sealed tin which is opened twice a year, when I first started to collect every couple of week I wanted to open it to pay for something or other but resisted, now I just put all my loose change in it and don't even think about it. Fingers crossed for Monday.xx

Thanks Amber ..... I think I will try to keep it if at all poss :D I've not been on a 'proper' holiday (IYKWIM) for absolutely yonks & there's a couple of places I've always wanted to go to so ideally I'd love to be able to use that to hopefully buy plane tickets!

    Pets insurance

Some of you may remember I've been having a huge dilemma with this - my insurer has pulled out  and has basically passed cover to a new provider. They're new to the pet insurance market (so no idea if they're any good or not) & we don't know the level of cover, cost or excess etc

Archie is now 9 & many insurers apply a 20% of costs on top of excess & Maisie turns 8 in October - and many insurers won't even take on dogs over that age (and aged 5 with some breeds)

Her policy doesn't renew until November so will def be the new co (apparently it's 'some date in September but we don't know when' which sounds suss:( as how can they not know if it's that close)

I've been really struggling to find anywhere with similar premiums so have been considering accident / injury policies (I tend to do this when they get really old anyway as wouldn't do 'drastic' things IYKWIM)

So - tried the Coop, who are supposed to be good. I did them before but the premium was huge :( have found out why!

Decided to try just Maisie (as if I leave her until renewal I can't move her due to her age so I'd be stuck whatever it was) - and it was within £1 of current policy :T - slightly lower cover but not an issue for me .... took out new policy last night

Then spent the night worrying about the cats :o (their policies renew in Sept so no idea what was happening with them!) Archie is already 9 so was worried I couldn't move him (but most seem to do up to 10 in cats) - tried Coop this morning AND .... their premium came out over double what I currently pay  and explains why the previous quote was so high!

Tried a couple of comparison sites but I'd either not heard of the ones with affordable policies OR wouldn't go with them

Then .... tried Direct Line - I have my house & car insurance with them so do get a bit of an extra discount AND there's a healthy 1st year discount applied (so I know it will increase a fair bit next year but will worry about that then!!) BUT ..... it's within £1 of what I pay now! (and with plenty of cover & the excess is lower!) :T

    Also got £35 cashback :money:

    Soooooooo relieved! :o

(sorry that was long - I've been worrying about it for ages as I just couldn't afford double what I currently pay and hated the thought of them not been covered)

Really pleased to hear that you've sorted out the pets insurance. It can be such a worry cant it! My cat is turning 10 in October and I am debating whether to carry on with her insurance as it gets so expensive (or not possible).
If anything to drastic happens to her at this age, I think it'd be unfair to put her through too much heavy treatment, but the alternative doesn't bear thinking about :(

Great to see you posting again regularly :) How are you getting on with the food budgeting?

    Hi want to be:D

Pets insurance is a bit of a hot potato for me - I honestly feel many are being priced out of having it as its rising so much but with the cost of vets fees what can you do?

I do think its a viscious circle - advances in treatment = higher costs = higher premiums

I also feel many can be I'll advised and some treatments really aren't in the best interests of the pet

I know on another forum someone who lives in France had an MRI for her dog that cost about 400 Euros - that would be nearly £3,000 here :eek:that's down to vets here sticking up costs as they assume people have insurance to pay for it = higher cost .... same with meds :(

I've heard of invoices being produced & then 'oh you're not insured are you' and figures being scored out & a new one 1/2 the cost put in instead - that will affect what we all pay as the insurers will cover their costs!

Mine go onto accident & injury policies (about £6 for the dog and £4 for a cat) when they get to the 'no drastic action' stage (varies pet to pet & their general health)

Food shopping - not really been keeping track :o BUT have been trying to stick to £30 / week and have been doing so most weeks

Trying to wade through some freezer stuff just now :)

So - new job today :)& the move on Thurs ..... a busy week

    Have a good one all

Thanks for that Rising - I don't usually bother ringing DirectLine but will try them next time. Big mog's premium nearly doubled this time, probably as he hit 7.

I'm not going to get started on the vet pharma etc industry - suffice to say that the posh vet I used to be with would ask how much your policy covered and the bill would be spookily a few pence below. Mine are with P@H now which seems reasonable and they are also on a monthly payment plan with the local P@H vets which covers their boosters and flea/ worming stuff plus another yearly consultation for £10 a month. I do like that as it means I can forget about budgeting for it.

I'm trying to build up pots for vet bills but they've been wiped out by two out of hours trips for little mog in the last 3 months... hope will be able to make better progress soon!

    That's my trouble too! :(

Mia's little 'hiccup' last month set me back around £150 (actually not bad considering she was there 3 times, kept in a morning, sedated & cleaned up etc) but .....

As for Maisie *sigh* she seems to have a good 3 or so 'hiccups' of one sort or another every year - each one costs around £120 - £150

    Our pot's totally stagnant!

    Well .... glad they're in!

Weather was awful :( - I was at the new house waiting for the removers and there was a huge HAIL storm  - thankfully stopped by the time it came to bringing in furniture

House is really nice :) BUT the garage is prob 3/4 full of furniture that won't go in (they knew it wouldn't all go in but decided to take it and then get rid of what wouldn't fit)

Went down yesterday and helped mum with unpacking / getting the kitchen sorted so at least that's done - dad managed to get his sky / tv working so he's a bit happier now too!

    Still chaos though!
