Why are people so concerned about sending a passport by mail?
At the end of the day, most new passports get mailed by the Passport Office. And many embassies process visa applications by post (that is more relevant for non-UK citizens)

There is a big difference between some passport office sending you your passport to your home address and you sending your passport to a big organisation's post room. Even if you send it recorded, you have no idea who has your passport after it was initially received and signed for, and you have no idea what happens with your passport whilst in the custody of a bank. Don't say bank etc employees are all 100% reliable.

And what actually can happen? My passport passes through so many hands during it's life that I don't really care if there are a few extra pairs of hands. E.g. it's a norm for many hotels abroad to keep your passport until you leave.

The costs are covered by the special delivery Compensation Cover.

Thats fine for getting it to its destination, but doesn't cover what the various bank employees will do with it, and they may well (most likely will) send it back by standard post.

Who was that? On the rare occasion I've sent off id, it's come back in a normal envelope, franked, and had a price of less than 50p.

You can always ask first and, if needed, enclose a prepaid Special Delivery envelope with address and instructions.

This account is a (high volume) instant access savings account hence the pitiful interest rate and ATM card.

A current account usually has a proper sort code / account number, debit card and the ability to have an overdraft facility / cheque book.

Can you give a 'bulletproof' definition of 'current' and 'savings' then?

    And?
All current accounts are instant access. Most pay pitiful interest and many come with a cash card.

I assume, so does this one as it allows DDs. Am I wrong?
debit card and the ability to have an overdraft facility / cheque book.
Absolutely not. Many current accounts have none of these.

    I've had both
The "banks" tend to send it back by plain post.
The "investment groups" tend send it by some recorded/special delivery

(I always get asked for paper certified copied)
