The Christmas present that you never got.

  • What a great thread! I've read it from page one and have loved it.

My 'never got for Christmas' gift, was a Barbie. I SO wanted one and asked Father Christmas for one every year, until one year I made a new best friend and went to her house. They were a 'posh' family and had a very posh house which I was in awe of, and when I went up to her bedroom to play, she not only had a Barbie, but also the house, the pony and the car, and a ton of Barbie clothes too!

That was it! I was furious with Father Christmas! I remember I wrote a very stiff letter to him telling him that I was very upset that I hadn't been given the Barbie I so wanted, when other girls got what they wanted every single year.

That year I got a 'type' of Barbie doll and a lot of clothes for her. All the clothes were wrapped up individually - which at the time I didn't understand. Now, however, I realise that my parents just didn't have the money to buy me the Barbie with all the things I was hoping for. So I got one of those 99p pretend Barbie dolls and a selection of clothes, all individually wrapped so that it looked like I had a lot of presents.

I did eventually get my Barbie doll. On my wedding day. She was dressed in a wedding dress ... and when it came the time for people to give the bride (me) those horse shoes and rolling pins etc etc ... my Dad came to me with his hands behind his back and quietly said ... "Do you remember when you were little, you never got a Barbie for Christmas? ... well chicken, you've finally got her" ... and from behind his back he produced this wondrous doll, with a ribbon tied to her so that I could 'hang her' with all the horseshoes etc. My eyes were as wide as saucers, and I burst into tears.

At the wedding reception, when the meal was over and everyone was busy doing their own thing, I quietly picked her up and just for a few private moments I sat, and became the 5/6/7/8 year old little girl I once was, and played with her. I'd finally got my Barbie.

I still have her - over thirty years later. She's stored with my wedding dress.
    .

That's beautiful, bless your Dad! :) It brought a tear to my eye.

I always wanted a train set, a Barbie or a Sindy and a Tiny Tears.
I got other dolls but never Tiny Tears, a Tressie which was similar to Barbie and had "growing" hair but just wasn't the same and never got a train set because I was a girl.
After a few years my mum must have given up and I got the Meccano I asked for, I spent hour after hour playing with it and was keeping it for when I had kids of my own but my mum gave it away.

I too wanted Mr Frosty, and chemistry set. Mr Frosty never arrived, and my brother got a chemistry set. Girls world was apparently more suitable for a girl. Boooo.

Oooh I really wanted Dreamphone too! Although I remember going to a friend's to play it one day and being disappointed that none of the guys were that good looking! :p

I also got a Fashion Wheel and the Barbie Camper Van. Loved those toys! :D One of my big regrets is getting rid of all my Barbie stuff as I'd love to still have it now... I'd probably play with it all too! :)

Ohmygod the fashion wheel! I had a slightly seperate 'problem' with presents in that if it was a sister's (I'm one of three) main present then there was unspoken rule that the others wouldn't get one. So the eldest got the fashion wheel and oh how i coveted it!

I was friends with twin girls growing up and they had Dreamphone but they were awful for cheating at every board game so it never worked out properly as obviously the game expects you to take turns etc so the clues never matched up

I distinctly remember really wanting a car garage but mum can't remember me asking for one, just used to love my friend's brothers and thought it was The Coolest Thing. Ditto for my baby cousin's Thomas the Tank dumper truck thing that was Thomas on a board taking these little balls around and it'd change into different vehicles. but that was a toddler toy when i was like five lol

I can only remember one present I didn't get that I really really wanted, it was a barbie sized kitchen that lit up. but it was a case of i'd seen the advert for it but mum couldn't find it anywhere

My sister once wanted a toy doll that crawled but she wasn't allowed it as it creeped my dad out and we was never allowed the dolls which cried when you took the dummy out. which seems fair enough lol

Oh, and my sisters have never let me forget that I once destroyed a china tea set on christmas day that my grandmother had bought for the middle one. I was about 18 month older and fell over on to it as i was only toddling. in fairness, there's only 15 months between me and the middle one so really, who buys a china tea set for a nearly 3 year old? :rotfl:

One present I did get that I really wanted was a Barbie. I was given the 'day to night'Barbie and didn't meet anyone else who had one until I moved in with my housemate and that had been the type of Barbie she had too!

I had 'day to night' Barbie as well! I adored her - she was the only 'proper' Barbie I ever had, although I had a few hand-me-down Cindy's. My little sister managed to pull her head off, and although my dad stuck it back on it wouldn't turn after that and she had no neck :o

The present I always wanted was a Big Yellow Teapot, but it was bought for same little sis instead. In fairness I probably was too old for it! My mum eventually bought me one off eBay as it had ecome such a running joke - I think it was for my 25th birthday :o

People mentioning the Chopper bike reminded me that I wanted one of those too. My best friend's grandmother lived on the Isle of Man and according to my friend, was a witch who could cast spells. I asked her to ask her Nan if she would cast a spell for a Chopper bike for me!

I never got one, but my dad did find a second hand normal bike for me, and a few years later I got a racer bike which I loved.
