What a great thread! I've read it from page one and have loved it.

My 'never got for Christmas' gift, was a Barbie. I SO wanted one and asked Father Christmas for one every year, until one year I made a new best friend and went to her house. They were a 'posh' family and had a very posh house which I was in awe of, and when I went up to her bedroom to play, she not only had a Barbie, but also the house, the pony and the car, and a ton of Barbie clothes too!

That was it! I was furious with Father Christmas! I remember I wrote a very stiff letter to him telling him that I was very upset that I hadn't been given the Barbie I so wanted, when other girls got what they wanted every single year.

That year I got a 'type' of Barbie doll and a lot of clothes for her. All the clothes were wrapped up individually - which at the time I didn't understand. Now, however, I realise that my parents just didn't have the money to buy me the Barbie with all the things I was hoping for. So I got one of those 99p pretend Barbie dolls and a selection of clothes, all individually wrapped so that it looked like I had a lot of presents.

I did eventually get my Barbie doll. On my wedding day. She was dressed in a wedding dress ... and when it came the time for people to give the bride (me) those horse shoes and rolling pins etc etc ... my Dad came to me with his hands behind his back and quietly said ... "Do you remember when you were little, you never got a Barbie for Christmas? ... well chicken, you've finally got her" ... and from behind his back he produced this wondrous doll, with a ribbon tied to her so that I could 'hang her' with all the horseshoes etc. My eyes were as wide as saucers, and I burst into tears.

At the wedding reception, when the meal was over and everyone was busy doing their own thing, I quietly picked her up and just for a few private moments I sat, and became the 5/6/7/8 year old little girl I once was, and played with her. I'd finally got my Barbie.

I still have her - over thirty years later. She's stored with my wedding dress.
    .

I love this, thank you for sharing :) I too never got a Barbie. I did get a Sindy doll one year though which I was delighted with.

As soon as I read the title I thought MR FROSTY! I think he was on the list for years, but I never got one. I had the Cadbury dispenser, a chemistry set, a cabbage patch doll and mouse trap though so after reading this thread I feel like I did quite well!

I wanted one of those kid-sized kitchenettes - I think it came on wheels, but I can't remember its name or who made it. After several Christmas' of pestering, my parents gave me the miniature alternative - Sindy's Kitchen Cafe.
I've still got that thing and still love it! It lives on a bookshelf, on display, in all it's pink and blue glory! :o The only toy I kept. I do still nostalgically hanker after the full sized version though! :D

a space hopper, our next door neighbours children had one and they were a bit older than my brother and myself, my mother asked if she could have it from the neighbour as they no longer used it, it used to sit in the window of their garage, she was declined

everything else i wanted and dint have was because my friends had it already and i was just sent to their house to play with it

    i still want a space hopper !

    how much ?

    Mr Frosty and Teddy Ruxpin.
I'm a 80's child, but I wonder if it's too late to add them to this years list. lol.

I had a Teddy Ruxpin! Loved him!

The only thing I remember wanting but not getting was a soda stream. We did end up getting one years later, probably when it became cheaper. I think it ended up in the back of a cupboard within a couple of months! My parents weren't the type to not get me something just because it was marketed for the other gender (I'm 28). I remember one year my brothers and I all got skate boards for Christmas... that was a good year!

I don't think I was ever disappointed with my Christmas presents ( apart from the snot green hand knitted jumper I got from my Auntie Dot ). I know now looking back that my parents were actually very hard up, it was the 70's with its high unemployment etc, they must have really struggled but I don't remember ever feeling poor or deprived. Some of the things people and mentioning are bringing back great memories, i'm feeling quite nostalgic for paper decorations, and balloons in the corners of the living room :rotfl:.

I think the Mr Frosty appeal might have been that you could make your own "Slushies" whenever you wanted, in a time when perhaps we got treats/sweets less often, this would have been amazing. I think it is like the chocolate dispenser, we thought we would magically have as much as we liked (maybe it was just me being greedy tho :o)

I actually got a Katy Copycat, it was rubbish lol

A 70s born, I never heard of mr frosty.
However did get space hopper, most awful thing to use, and needed to be pumped up sometimes but cos I couldn't do it, it went months being too flat to use.
Got some roller boot things, not sure what make, but probs a no name brand.
Got Lego by the bucketful, but always wanted meccano, maybe it was more expensive.
Got a girls world thing, which I hated with a passion.
Very early 70s I got the first ever walking doll, soon as it was out the package set to walk, it fell over cos floor not quite flat.

And hurrah, got a pony, which although you might all be dead jealous of me now, meant that any birthdays/Christmas from then on was, no presents for you, you have a horse.

Don't get me wrong, having a pony was the greatest thing in the world and I was so happy with mine, but they cost a major fortune. There is no way I could have done the same for my kids.
