The Christmas present that you never got.

  • I would have liked a scooter but I don't think I actually asked for one so never got it . Not for Christmas , but the talk of shoes made me remember that I wanted those plastic sandals in the summer . I got them , but mam had to cut some of the plastic off the sides with a razor blade as my feet were too wide and also flat! They were so uncomfortable too.
  • I was desperate for a chemistry set. The one I wanted had a picture on the box of a boy in a lab coat holding a test tube with (i think) copper sulphate in it. Never got one.

Also really wanted a thing called Replica, which IIRC was some kind of plaster moulding kit which you chipped at with a chisel to reveal a replica of something you'd dipped in it. (have I imagined this?)

Had a few of those Dairy Milk dispensers.

Had a brill board game called Movie Maker, which disappeared over the years and is now quite collectable and scarce, like so many of my childhood toys and books. Drat.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

    Mr Frosty and Teddy Ruxpin.
I'm a 80's child, but I wonder if it's too late to add them to this years list. lol.

I used to get barbies but I played with 'shaving foam ken' (who comes up with these things?!) more than them - he was usually kidnapping barbie and holding her hostage!

I'm the same age but I was never got a ken doll. My brother did try making me one from one of my barbies. It involved cutting her hair and some filing down of plastic......

I really wanted one of those kiddy mini ovens that would bake one cake at a time.

My nephew wanted Mr Frosty for as long as I could remember. I bought him one for his 21st and he made vodka slushies.

lol my sister bought me Mr Frosty for my 21st and ended up doing the same thing!
  • What a great thread! I've read it from page one and have loved it.

My 'never got for Christmas' gift, was a Barbie. I SO wanted one and asked Father Christmas for one every year, until one year I made a new best friend and went to her house. They were a 'posh' family and had a very posh house which I was in awe of, and when I went up to her bedroom to play, she not only had a Barbie, but also the house, the pony and the car, and a ton of Barbie clothes too!

That was it! I was furious with Father Christmas! I remember I wrote a very stiff letter to him telling him that I was very upset that I hadn't been given the Barbie I so wanted, when other girls got what they wanted every single year.

That year I got a 'type' of Barbie doll and a lot of clothes for her. All the clothes were wrapped up individually - which at the time I didn't understand. Now, however, I realise that my parents just didn't have the money to buy me the Barbie with all the things I was hoping for. So I got one of those 99p pretend Barbie dolls and a selection of clothes, all individually wrapped so that it looked like I had a lot of presents.

I did eventually get my Barbie doll. On my wedding day. She was dressed in a wedding dress ... and when it came the time for people to give the bride (me) those horse shoes and rolling pins etc etc ... my Dad came to me with his hands behind his back and quietly said ... "Do you remember when you were little, you never got a Barbie for Christmas? ... well chicken, you've finally got her" ... and from behind his back he produced this wondrous doll, with a ribbon tied to her so that I could 'hang her' with all the horseshoes etc. My eyes were as wide as saucers, and I burst into tears.

At the wedding reception, when the meal was over and everyone was busy doing their own thing, I quietly picked her up and just for a few private moments I sat, and became the 5/6/7/8 year old little girl I once was, and played with her. I'd finally got my Barbie.

I still have her - over thirty years later. She's stored with my wedding dress.

Am I the only person that really wanted a pottery wheel? My friend had one and I really wanted one too!
I also wanted one of those 'real working' microwaves, they used to have an advert with a little girl making cakes in it and I wanted to be like her.
I wanted one of those life size walking and talking dolls to be my friend :-( I used to have dreams that I'd get a Barbie jeep and we could drive around together, clearly I was a lonely child!!

However, I did get some things that I asked for, like Sindy & Go Go (the dog that walked on his little lead), Scamps (my own walking dog - though not the one I originally asked for) and a campervan for my Barbie (but again, not the original Barbie one, a cheaper version)!
  • Ok, so I just googled mr frosty....I'd no idea what it was.

Tell me....was the marketing good? I don't really get the appeal?

The marketing must have been good, as I still remember all the words from the advert

"Mr Frosty is such fun, he makes treats for everyone, pop the ice under his hat and turn the handle just like that.... Squirt in the flavour that you'd like and delicious lollies, mmmmmm, that's nice"

    :rotfl:

(Don't remember any of the GCSE maths syllabus, or my 7 times table, though. Always the way!)

What wonderful parents you have. That is one of the best memories that I have ever read on MSE. It brought tears to my eyes.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

Oh I really wanted a mr frosty! I was talking to my mum about it a while ago and she said 'that s*dding mr frosty! He appeared on your list every year and I wasn't paying that kind of money for a piece of tat' :rotfl:

I was a late 70's child and my parents had no problem with me being a tomboy though and I did get the blue skates with yellow rainbow design, a chemistry set and the remote control car (a proper race car style one as well :D) so I wasn't too hard done by :D. I have my own son and daughter now and DS had a blue pushchair when he was a toddler and DD has asked Father Christmas for a remote control car :j :j (not sure who's more excited by this, her or me, I thought it was awesome last year when she got 4 boxes of Thomas train track :D)
