I could throw a heap of money at a PC now to future proof it

Computers can never be "future proof". The best that can be aimed for is a longer length of time before it needs upgrading/replacing, but at a higher initial cost.

Consoles have always been the nearest you can get to 'future-proofing', in as much that games written for that platform will always run as intended, for as long as they make the games.

My Xbox 360 has outlasted my PC's ability to play new games by many years, but it is very limited in its uses. My old PC is still a lot more useful than the Xbox, even though it can't play any games from the last 5 years.

Getting back to the Xbox One versus PS4 debate, I decided to upgrade my PC instead. It worked out cheaper than either of the consoles.
    I have no signature.
  • They're very much the same when it comes down to gaming, go for the one that has the exclusives you'll enjoy the most. I'd wait for the time being if you want the PS4 (it's what I have), the game line up is poor at best, it doesn't even have a racing game at the moment.

Also something you may want to take into account is that a lot of games require you to install the games, most are very big installs too, 30-40gb is common. PS4 can be upgraded by replacing the HDD, where the X1 will need an additional external storage device.

Which at the time of writing you can't just plug one in as they haven't enabled that feature yet. :rotfl:

No need to, you could probably download every game so far and have space left. They have said it will be a feature that is coming.

Having had both for a little while now, I would say not to bother with either till next christmas.

If you don't have a console picking up a 360 or a ps3 is much much much better value.

Both will naturally have a limited collection of games, I don't think there either really has a must play game atm and well both consoles feel unfinished for non gaming applications you will come across situations where you can't do something you could do on the prev gen, in this respect the PS4 feels more unfinished than the XB1

Gaming wise its a pretty similar, the XB1 has a slightly more varied line up atm.

Controllers are both good, the PS4 is miles better than the PS3 one but it has a terrible battery life. The XB1 is a bit better than the 360.
Surprisingly the kinnect voice controls are useful on the XB1 when watching netflix / 4od / whatever, you can still get set top box passthrough but obv the XB1 can't control them just yet, which really doesn't matter too much if you don't want to use the kinnect controls.
    I don't have a ps eye so i can't comment on it.

Overall because I'm still going back to my PS3 for things I think its best to leave it while till they both become more rounded out.

Mind you I won't get to bang on about my "rig" like those PC elitist jerks do. Just kidding! and the mod scene looks tasty.

    LOL that's half the fun!

Yeah, I shouldn't really have brought PC's into this debate. I would always encourage people to have a go at building a gaming PC, it's amazing what you can do with £500 these days.

Nope. IGN downloaded every release game and the hard drive was full they couldn't install them all.

Not that it matters at the minute.

Dare I say it - don't get EITHER OF THEM ...

If you are desperate to spend that much money, for the same amount get an Xbox 360 AND a PS3 (new, not pre-owned), with a heap of pre-owned games.

Much more MSE. Both are solid consoles, with no real faults anymore, and with a massive library of games.

The new-gen Xbone and PS4 have potential faults to iron out, few games so far - and what there is are very expensive (£50 or so each) compared to the previous gen console games.

Then, in a year or two, the Xbone and PS4 will have dropped a lot, be more reliable, and have more game for less money each.

If you choose to stick with PS3 then this article might be of interest - http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/12/26/say-goodbye-to-gran-turismo-5-resistance-series-multiplayer-in-2014.aspx

The chap saying get a last gen console is probably bang on, though I do own a PS4, I find the idea of a cheaper console, with a huge catalog of great games I'm yet to play and dirt cheap when second hand from the likes of GAME a very tempting one. Not to mention the fact IGN gave AC4 the award for best Xbone and PS4 game of 2013 is a clear sign the launch games aren't great and given the fact it's cross-gen the gaming aspect of a next gen console is right now not that compelling.

I really only got it because I look forward to a few games next year, and was offered a next gen console for Christmas... had I not taken it I doubt I'd be able to get one in six months time. :P

    Cheers
