The vows are taken, forever. The meaning and significance in them is when they are mutually entered in to. Therefore, they really cannot be renewed, in my opinion, unless they have been broken, as they are still valid. Really can't see the point.
I'm with inkie on this. A vow is a solemn or earnest pledge or promise binding the person making it to perform a specified act or behave in a certain way. The vow doesn't need to be renewed, there's nothing to renew unless it's been broken.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I agree with pretty well everything you've written and obviously it isn't just people who've broken their vows who want to renew them. However, I do think that it's quite a silly idea and would prefer a really nice meal together with a toast to the last 20 (or whatever) years and to the next 20. Alternately, if religious, a blessing would seem to be the ideal solution.

I can see what your saying and, as I said, I am not even totally sure me and OH will have a vow renewal. We might on our 35th or 40th just take my family for a nice meal.

I don't think a renewal is a silly idea though - I find it quite romantic

No, it doesn't NEED to be renewed but some people think it is a nice idea to renew after a certain length of marriage.

I think when so many people marry and divorce and then often marry and divorce again it's nice to celebrate the fact that you are still married and still happy.

My parents who have been married over 60 years often have people commenting about the fact that their 3 children have all been married over 30 years and are all first marriages. Why not celebrate something that seems to be so unusual it warrants comments?

    The divorce rate is 42%.

Yes its high, but more married couples still stay together than separate.
