Christmas bonus

Do people get Christmas bonuses these days? Having mostly worked in the public sector that never happens, but I have 2 jobs in private companies now and each has given a bonus this year. In one I've had vouchers for use in their own establishment (it's a pub) which is kind though of minimal cost to him and I'm very unlikely to use them so will probably give away during the next year. In the other, a shop, the boss gives money, he has said he deliberately wouldn't give his own vouchers as he wants us to be able to use it as we like. (which is great!) he also gives a box of chocs or biscuits.

I think I'm really lucky but this is new to me - what happens in other places? I suspect that Christmas bonuses are rare these days.

  • I work for a private company and we received an extra money bonus which is based on the profitability of the company and your annual PDR review.

I actually received a small pay increase last November and apparently I can expect to receive a small increment in January too (it normally just exceeds the national rate of inflation, so I won't notice any difference) Does that count?

I work in a private company and we receive damn all, surprise surprise their. Well I tell a lie, we each got handed the companies latest broucher the other day, that's the only thing they have ever given us.

But apart from that I've always worked for private firms and we always got something even if it was just an extra £20, my current employer is just a miserable !!!!!.
  • Will you at least get an small increment in January? To at least match the rate of inflation.

It's a long, long time since I worked anywhere that gave a Christmas bonus (probably 1980s), although we are getting a modest pay rise backdated a few months included in the December pay.
  • Is the world seriously that bad where companies aren't giving a bonus? I think even NEXT are giving a Christmas (annual?) bonus! And they are an abysmal company to work for.

We used to get £50 cash in a christmas card each year, that stopped and the company paid for a buffet and all you can drink bar, it worked out that it cost them more for having a free bar.

I once got a £3 Christmas bonus working at ASDA. I think it was down to how well it does against targets, it was a brand new store and actually did amazingly well.

Aside from that, nothing. I've heard my current company does them, but I'm not expecting anything and wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't get anything.

That is tax deductible, I don't think bonuses are.

They are still quite common, although not all are done at christmas.

Always worked in private sector & the answer is never. Not even an Xmas card!

My sister even works for a corporate division of a large bank and she don't get an Xmas bonus either.

  • **Sighs nostalgically for the days of Christmas bonuses and paid-for Christmas parties**

I work in the public sector and count myself lucky to have a permanent desk, what with all the hot-desking going on, and of course there is no Christmas bonus in any shape, size or form.

My husband works for a profitable company, which is doing well, but there is no Christmas bonus from them either. Nor a paid-for Christmas "do".

I thought those things were long gone.

I can remember, as a child, my dad's company having a massive summer party where all the employees, their spouses and children went out for the day and had games, presents and a picnic.
