Christmas bonus

Reading this thread reminded me of a favourite Christmas film....Griswold's Family Christmas or "Christmas Vacation" I think is its proper title.......
I just love the humour (and pathos in the plot about his Christmas Bonus):)
Personally I work in the public sector....no bonus, no card, no gift, social event we pay for ourselves.....But I really enjoy having the time off twixt Christmas and New Year without having to take annual leave.
My line manager does buy me a drink
And thinking about it....I actually prefer not having to kow-tow all year just to get a couple of extra ££ at Christmas. I have a contract of employment, I fulfil my side, employer fills their side...that's as far as I want it to go really.:A Goddess :A0 -

And quite right too that we don't get a bonus, we don't work a private sector company that has profits etc. We also have extremely secure jobs, that's bonus enough."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
We get a Dec bonus based on company profitability. As I've been there a long time mine is quite a significant amount but it's not an Xmas bonus as such, just that December is when it gets paid.
The company pays for us to attend a Christmas party of our choosing/arranging but we pay for partners. Over the past week or so we have worked much shorter days too which is nice.
We don't get corporate gifts or anything, we used to a secret santa but as our department grew it got a bit much so now we all put money into a joint pot and we have a big office buffet a few days before we all break up. I manage two departments and I make sure I also take them some chocolates or biscuits with me

This thread is really interesting, I suppose I thought Christmas bonuses were a done thing so I would've had a shock if I ever changed jobs!
We got one in 2011, worked out about £250 after tax so that was fantastic. No bonus-bonus in 2011, but every year the company pays for a Christmas meal for everybody so there is still appreciation shown which is lovely.
This year I feel we did really well as it was a tough year for several reasons and we dealt with a lot of carp due to a change in systems, so profits were not as good as normal and we weren't expecting anything. We got the meal paid for (and a drinks tab, until MD got scared by people getting shots :rotfl: ), then some jewellery which admittedly came out of courier lost property so didn't cost anything, but it could've been sold, then a £100 pre-tax bonus which was completely unexpected.
So I guess for all I think that a lot of things need improving, I actually do very well!0 -
We got nothing, not even a company 'Merry Christmas' Email. Not surprised, been working for them a long time and don't expect anythingThe opposite of what you know...is also true0

We get extra holiday based on how the company is doing - this year we got 5 extra days - the company will also buy them back if not wanted.
We also get a yearly bonus in June, usually about 50% of a month's salaryChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
I work for a large company who employs around 900ppl. We got a Xmas night out on the last Fri of Nov with a 3 course meal and 4 drinks vouchers. Separately we got a large hamper each worth around £20-£25. I definitely count myself lucky as the xmas do costs 1000s of pounds for so many and the hamper is a nice touch. We get a performance review in Jan with the view of a pay rise of between 1-5% but we do not get any bonuses. Last year I got 3% which was good considering I only did a 1/4 of the year. My American counterparts do however which is annoying.0

Years and years ago I worked in a well known department store and we were all told that there were no bonuses as we didn't hit targets - fair enough, however after the Christmas sale we were met with a huge poster advertising how much we had taken in the sale and what % had been put by for our managers!!!
The last company I worked for we got great bonuses for the first few years then they disappeared completely about 3 years ago. I'm self employed now so no bonus unless I pay for it

Nothing for the Christmas just gone at my current employer
I remember the one Christmas I worked at a mobile network, everyone got a huge hamper containing 3 bottles of wine, 2 large bottles of WKD, a bottle of Schloer, jars of chutney, jam and sweets, 2 tubes of Pringles, a tin of shortbread, 2 boxes of chocolate (Dairy Box and After 8s), a box of tea bags, a large Christmas cake, a large Christmas pud, 12 mince pies and a Stollen! The colleagues that didn't drink for religious reasons or through personal choice got bottles of posh cordial and more Schloer instead.
Had to go home on the bus with the open basket with sellopane wrapper. Cumbersome to carry. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I think it really does depend on the industry... In some (e.g. finance, pharma or oil & gas) it's still very much the norm to put on all expenses paid, lavish Christmas dos for the staff (and their +1s of course)... and to pay Christmas bonuses in kind (I received a few hundred pounds in retail vouchers).Wins for 2009: Nada, Zip, Zilch
