It's depressing me that so many private companies treat staff like a number (amazon, next et al)

I'm starting to realise perhaps how lucky I am to work for a company which treats staff as individuals and that values the experience, knowledge and possible improvements they can bring. Also working 9-5(ish) Monday to Friday is nice, which appears to becoming increasingly rare these days.

Oh and we are having a Christmas party this year for which the the taxis, venue and Dinner and a couple of drink vouchers paid for by the company.

In return, I truly do work incredibly hard, efficient, punctual, professional and will often go the extra mile to help keeps the gears in motion in attempt to help the business grow and expand.

All you people who work hard for little thanks. Are you looking for work in other places? Or you just grin and bear it?
Have you bought your boss a present? If so why not? Surely expecting a bonus or a party is the same thing?

I work in the public sector and we get a £320 (or so) payment each year based on performance. It's paid in the December paypacket so we refer to it as a bonus even though it's arguably not really one as such.

We also get a box of chocolates as a gift for Christmas too, which is nice...

I've certainly got no complaints. This is more than a lot of people get.

I got a bottle of wine last year from my boss but hes now put his notice in so I should imagine we'll get nothing this year. Bosses higher up I think we are grateful if they even know our name. I think, like in many companies, we are just a number that brings in x to the company each week due to the shifts we work

Annual bonus based on company performance paid in August. Usually between £500 and £1500

Christmas is £250 in M&S vouchers and a couple of bottles of wine. Long service gets you a hamper too.

Some amazing examples, can those who have generous employers please name them? I feel a job hunt coming on!

I actually feel a bit insulted by the boss who has given the bonus in vouchers for his own establishment, it shouldn't have but it has coloured my view of that job rather. I almost feel I'd rather he didn't give anything - I know I'm really ungrateful. He probably thinks he's really generous. A colleague who works behind the bar says that for the pub staff (I do his admin) he provides a party but, it's always in the pub on a quiet Monday night and they still have to be ready to serve customers. And considering they are allowed a free snack (sandwich etc) when on duty for over 4 hours it's not that special. However he's always said he's a businessman, not there to make friends.

It's nice to feel appreciated though.

Now where's that sits vac page?!!
  • In the public sector we have no bonus and never have done, I think that those who get any sort of bonus are very lucky.

I'm guessing however you will have sick pay entitlement, some sort of annual rise, may be even a pension scheme?

No bonus but we do get a paid for Xmas party and as it's out of county, employer pays for a hotel room overnight.

They also tie in a staff meeting on the same day so get travel expenses paid.

Last year our CEO sent everyone a Xmas card with a scratch card inside, nice idea I think as it does make staff feel 'thought about.' Nothing so far this year but there's still a week to go. Last year, we also got a small % pay rise in December, again nothing yet so far.

Other than the above, we do get to leave early most days over the Xmas/New Year period due to the work we do, which is a bit of a bonus, not worth keeping annual leave back when you only end up working 4 or 5 hours, well not unless you have something special planned or a trip away anyway,

I work in the private sector for a large company. We get an annual bonus based on the company's performance, paid in February. It's variable depending on a scale of how much profit we make, but if we're on target it'll be about 10% of salary.

We also get an amazing Christmas party including overnight stay for ourselves and partners in a four star hotel, plus dinner and free bar all night including copious amounts of champagne, and a nice Christmas hamper which I think used to come from John Lewis and now comes from some dedicated hamper company.

Oh, and an extra half day holiday on Christmas Eve as we shut at lunchtime, but before we leave there's carols, champagne/orange juice and nibbles round the Christmas tree for everyone.

Have to admit I do feel very lucky, my job is stressful and could be better paid but we are well looked after.
