There are lots of ants so some are bound to get in whatever you do, especially if they find a food supply. The good news is that flying ants only last a very short time to mate. They were flying here yesterday (Berkshire). Once they have done that you will only find walking ants.

Make them a minature sign stating no trespassing. You could also erect a matchstick fence.

Alternatively use anti climb paint or some kind of stay stick adhesive. Once a few have been stuck to death the others will avoid.

I used to get this problem - I think they were nesting in the wall cavities, and finding their way into the house via any one of numerous small cracks that are bound to present somewhere on the interior walls. However, this stopped completely a few years ago when I had cavity wall insulation installed.

Ah, that's interesting. We plan on having cavity wall insulation installed in the next few months.

we had some in the house yesterday *shudder* about 50 of them, then my boyfriend moved his box of tools (which have been in the kitchen diner for a week or 2 as he is doing up the kitchen), to find a mini ants nest and lots of empty egg casings he hoovered them up the flying ones and the nest and emptied the hoover out, i was really brave and ran off! but they were HUGE and hideous!

Our chickens go mad for the flying ants - obviously a real delicacy!

every year around this time we get a plague of ants and flying ants that come in through the conservatory and into the living room. they are horrendous!
i usually try and dyson them (suck them up with a vacuum) or put some ant powder but this is an ongoing process and knocks me sick.
what can i do to stop them?
i heard about ant baits where the worker ants will take poison back to the nest and they all die off but what about the flying ones?
btw i hate killing things but its them or me!

Same here theres loads allover, a blow torch is good but cant find it currently:rolleyes:, so im having to stand on them instead:D

Try to find out where the nest is. If inside a wall...harder to deal with. If nest is outside, pour boiling water over it. That will ensure whole nest is dead. If nest is inside the wall, block all gaps with silicon sealant and spray copious amount of anti-ant product inside if you can.

It seems that there has been more than the usual flying ants around, I saw a swarm of them outside my kitchen window yesterday, it was horrendous.

Getting back to the 'Ant Stop', my last bottle ran out, the one that lasted for 3 years, so bought another, and it definately stops them.

I spray it around the patio doors bit, and the ants do come in at first, but they are dead by the time they get on my floor, admittidly its not nice, so like the other posters, I am hoovering up every day.
But they have stopped the last few days, so something must be killing them.:D

I'm relieved to know that it's not just me. Having watched some tonight, I think our problem is in the cavity wall coz they were coming out of a hole in the back door frame. There are lots of "breather" bricks in our walls so they can easily get in there. We have patched up the holes but I found two flying ants upstairs in our bathroom which has made me really panic. Only way they could have got in is thru the window vent as the window has been closed all day.

Do companies such as rentokil deal with ants nests in cavity walls?
