I want to get rid of ants! (merged threads)

Hi,
I noticed a few weeks ago that there seem to be quite a few Ants in the back garden.
Last week we had a garden party and left the kitchen window slightly open overnight (because we had a bouncy castle connected to the plug socket).
When I came down stairs the next morning, the worktop in the kitchen was crawling with Ants - I had left my sons Birthday cake on the worktop with foil over the top, but when I took the foil off, the cake was covered with Ants
We have been away for 5 days and I only found 1 Ant in the Kitchen today, but when I told my Parents about the Ants they insisted I should call the Council and they will deal with the Ants.
I'm not sure I should be ringing the Council as it doesn't seem to be a big problem. I was wondering if I should just try some kind of Ant Killer from a DIY shop or something. I do have 2 young Children (2 and 4) so would need to be very carefull if using poison etc.
Help!

Well we have tried everything and still the little !!!!!!s are comming round.
the kitchen is spotless no food anywhere we have enven got my dad to clear up the sugar he spills makeing drinks but we still have an ant problem.
we bought 2 packs of the nippon ant traps they love the stuff, I have been feeding them it for 2 weeks they have gone through 1 tube.
i have taken to dismanteling the kitchen nightly to place extra peices of paper under the cupboards with the bait on and they eat that too.
good luck0 -
Try this, it worked very very well in our house, we had thousands in our house. Make sure to leave them out for a couple of days, it is called an ant stop bait station and you get 2 in pack, put one outside near where you reckon they are coming from and one in your kitchen. They are in stock in Homebase, B&Q and Tesco which is the cheapest. Good luck.0

Thanks.
I didn't realise Tesco would sell Ant Killer stuff - I am going there tomorrow anyway.
The pictures of ants running about on the ant stop website has made my skin crawl! _pale_

We tried all sorts but they kept coming back. The council will come out to you but only if they are in the House and so is the nest.
The way we got rid of them in the end was when we were having the path relayed basically we found the nest added a little petrol and lit it, worked a treat no more ants since. Bit drastic I know but a damned site cheaper than the shares I had in Nippon etc, assuming you can lift the flags and fire the nest.Cheers

Peppermint - peppermint plant right outside where they had been coming in and peppermint essential oil on bits of cottonwool stuck in airbrick they had been coming through. Worked so far. Touch wood!0

Try Dethlac from Wilko's. It is a spray which leaves an invisible film for up to 6 months and is effective even when it rains/surface gets washed.
Definitely the only product that has worked effectively for me. The ant bait is only short-term which you have to keep topping up.
Try it - it is very good.0 -
Apparently if you draw a line with chalk they dont cross over it, not sure if it works0

Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems
