try Nippon gel available in most garden centres, you place it near the route that they travel and they eat it then return to the nest and it kills them in the nest, for large nests it may take more than one application but has never failed for me in the UK,I say that coz at my house in Spain I had the same problem so took a couple of boxes with me but they ignored it(it is sweet)and the Spanish ants are meat eaters little !!!!!!sI

i put some jam in a little tray outside for them. they make a beeline for it and leave the house alone. (make it easy for them to get it).
they are only looking for food. make sure the house is spotless and all food spills are cleaned up etc...Get some gorm.0 -

I've been using nippon for about 4yrs now and it works really well.:j
I get ants in the house twice a year at the beggining and the end of the summer.
They come indoors in the colder months and they live in the bricks normally around a warm area (in mine it's next to the radiator).
They drive me mad and make my skin crawl:mad:Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person touse the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D0 -
Sugar and borax in a small tray where other animals and children cannot get at it .
Dosn't work straight away but the workers will feed it to the queen and she will become infertile so the nest will eventually die out .0 -
We put the powder right along the very edge of the house so they don't come in.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I have a problem with flying ants. They come into the house through the patio doors (under the door frame, the carpet is fitted right upto this point). I have tried using Ant Killer powder (inside the house) but although they seem to die they still cover the carpet. I have some Raid but as it is inside will this stain the carpet ?0

This may be unconventional, but... we had a problem with ants coming under the front door, and wiping throughly along the door frame and carpet with a Boots "extra-strength" insect repellent wipe (the ones with DEET, meant to be wiped on the skin to repel mosquitos) worked a treat at getting rid of them at the first try. These are the ones I think:
