every year around this time we get a plague of ants and flying ants that come in through the conservatory and into the living room. they are horrendous!
i usually try and dyson them (suck them up with a vacuum) or put some ant powder but this is an ongoing process and knocks me sick.
what can i do to stop them?
i heard about ant baits where the worker ants will take poison back to the nest and they all die off but what about the flying ones?
btw i hate killing things but its them or me!

Up to a couple years ago we had an old back boiler which we took the front fire off and placed a cover over it, but the blighters used to drop down from behind the boiler and land on the carpet.
Like you I used too feel sick and was always clearing up them up.

I got hold of some 'ant stop' comes in a red trigger bottle, would remove the cover, and sort of squirt the stuff up, and it did the trick.
We have now removed the boiler and blocked it up so we dont have them any more, but its brilliant stuff for ants.

We also had the ordianary ants coming in the back door, and thru the patio doors, so I would squirt along outside at the first sighn of the sun, and every couple weeks squirt again, it definately works.

It leaves a film that lasts up to 6 months, and the ants do take it back to the nest, the first day or two you will still see the ants, but they do stop coming.
My friend had same problem, and I lent her my bottle, and she was very impressed by the results.

They worked on mine, they were the ones that used to drop down from the chimney were the old back boiler was, and land practically by my feet.

That was the reason I started using 'ant stop', but then the ordinary ants starterd to come in by the back door and patio.

Have a look and see if you can find the nest, if you see tiny mounds of earth in corners, then that could be the nest, and blitz it with the ant stop, and in the mean time still spary around your door, and step areas.

We have them too!!! and I hate them they seem to be coming through the skirting boards there is no sign on any coming from the exterior, which is what worries me the most.

Strated off with just ants and I sprayed an ant spray and vacumed the dead ones and for a few days I'd find several dead in the area I'd sprayed.

Since then they have seem to have moved to several places in the house thank god only downstairs although including the back of the fridge in the kitchen!

The flying ones are worst dropping anywhere as they can't seem to fly properly worst bit is in the kitchen.

Where can I buy this particular ant spray as the one I have just kills the one that are out but they keep returning. :-(

Normally any gardening centre, but saw sainsburys and woolworths were selling it, so I would imagine that any supermarket is stocking it now.

Its just called 'Ant stop', come in a red square looking trigger gun bottle, and lasts for ever.
I have had the same bottle 3 years now, and still got plenty in it, used some the other day, so its still working.
Its definately much better than the nippon stuff.

Me too,I've tried the ant traps, they did'nt seem to work. The ant powder did but it looks unsightly and in the wet weather just washes away.I used Raid spray cost about £2.49 that seemed to kill them but it almost killed me in the process it stank of chemicals. But no matter what I use and no matter where I put it they just seem to reappear within a week.

To stop them coming indoors I used vinegar spray - they seemed to hate it and run round madly but didn't seem to actually kill them just deter them! They haven't been inside since though.

However, we have huge ant piles in the garden and I want to get rid of them - not sure vinegar would work as if they run, they may end up inside!!!
