Aw poor cat, it's just loving the affection. I have seen elderly well loved cats with a thyroid condition who have similar matting issues though. Might not be, but might be. Who will pay if the vet wants to test for that.?Norn Iron Club member 4730

I was thinking too, you only have the owner's say-so that the cat is as old as that ... it might not be but that might be the "excuse" they use for its appearance.
I have rescued 5 cats ... (and postered everywhere to try and find the owners when they turned up in similar states to this cat, a number of them with injuries needing medical attention straightaway so I couldn't ignore that) ... but each time they have looked like I would imagine old cats to look like .. thin, bedraggled, not in great health ... and yet all of them turned out, on medical examination to be around 2 to 4 years of age ... even the vet was surprised ...
So it may even be that the cat is relatively young yet this is the excuse the owner's use ... it's amazing how quickly a cat can get to look like this when it has the stress of having to fend for itself outside and if it is not a good hunter then it will go hungry ...
Similarly, I have a friend who has cat who goes outside and she has thyroid problems (the cat, that is ... !!) ... poor thing looks in a shocking state, but my friend had a cloth collar embroidered with the words "LOVED BUT ILL OAP" on it so hopefully if anyone thinks she's neglected or in need of help, they will see that and know she's not in need of rescue. She is chipped too, though.
So I can see both sides of the coin ... but I've puzzled this over in my head and to be honest, when it comes to an animal's wellbeing, I would rather cop a shouting at from an irate owner because I had stuck my nose in to try and help than leave the cat to whatever fate awaits ... and unfortunately, there are lots of people who still believe that a cat will find its own food quite happily on the streets (I did too, years ago, before I took my gang in) ... but as independent as people think cats are, they do need to be loved and looked after ... and I think the owners are falling short on those counts ...
So good luck kitty ... you've got two people watching out for you who want to help you ... please keep us informed of how it all goes ... fingers crossed something can be done to improve this little girl's lot ... xxxx0 -
To be fair, i'm not exactly sure how old my own cat is, cant remember the year I got her. Sure the vet could tell me via her first jabs. But whether she is actually 12 and a half or coming up 14 i'd have to look it up....and my cat is spoiled rotten, so the fact that they don't know her age or there is a discrepancy I don't think really means much. What is more important is the care she receives.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. Kitty put her paws on Ewa's knee today and she felt the stomach - either pregnant or full of warms, neither good news...
It is raining like hell today, poor kitty
Cat was fed and cuddled both morning and evening now but that is that can be done at the moment.0 -
Does anyone have some idea how much blood tests for a cat would be?
Including FIV and FLV?0 -
oh lord, my own vet did these for Nicki - but that was before I agreed to adopt him, and he never did charge me for them.0

according to Tesco site - about £109.

An 'old cat profile' cost me £84.40 and £16.88 VAT, so £101.28 altogether. That was back in Feb. My vet is crazy expensive, but I hope that helps.0
