Economics. (A levels Maths, Physics, Economics)
Well - he will graduate this summer so hasn't actually got the degree yet!
Economics on top of Matsh economics and physics...purses lips - after all that is what I have.
Does he really want a proper job straight away rather than some traveling?
I will PM you the company website, we took on 2 grads last year, we aim for 1 or 2 a year) but may well take on one more this year.I think....0 -

This time I convinced HR to advertise externally rather than relying on our website but the results were no different. General standard was very poor - noticeably worse than six months ago and disastrous compared to 3-4 years ago.
Just reflects that the city is hiring now and wages are going up. Our pay bands haven't moved since 2007. Senior management has it's head in the sand and is generating hopeless suggestions and witter about favourable work life balance (which vanished at least 5 years ago) whilst insisting pay packages benchmark favourably to competitors and pay is not a factor - meanwhile more of our staff leave to do more junior roles elsewhere for 50% payrises.
Oh dear, hope it's not you interviewing me tomorrow“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
+1 (my son's looking for a first graduate job)
We try (pointlessly in my opinion) to recruit people with quite specific experience that they don't really need. I would much rather recruit intelligent people without the experience (not necessarily graduates either just anyone who is literate, numerate and interested...) and train them up but no one will let me do that. We have a formal grad scheme but I don't like the way it is operated and it isn't the solution to our problems as they get rotated between several departments during their 3 yr program so by the time you have trained them they are off to another team. I think the long term solution is to run our own departmental grad scheme under the radar without HR realising what we are doing which will be tricky but we will be left with no option soon unless there is a radical review of pay.0 -

Interesting. A big chunk of my presentation tomorrow is based around exactly what you're saying; recruiting people for the required personality traits, because the rest can be taught.
I hope it's you interviewing me tomorrow
NB It won't be, I'm not going into the financial sector.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
Have you considered leaving to do easier work for more money elsewhere? Sounds good to me.
Not really. The more you get paid the less attractive something like that is, IMO. Once you reach a certain point that funds the lifestyle you want then you can afford to accept a lower salary than you would get elsewhere in return for much more interesting work.
I think senior management tend to fail to remember what it is like not to be loaded though.
If you're on £200k and living in nice house in a leafy suburb and doing something really interesting, you might not be that interested in a £300k job that you would hate.
If you're on £30k and renting in a shared house in Whitechapel and someone offers you a boring job paying £45k you're probably going to take the money rather than stay on £30k and keep the interesting work. Our senior management don't seem to be able to comprehend this as they expect the lower paid staff to make career decisions in the same way that they do.0 -
Do any of the NP know Llandidrod Wells? What do you lot think of http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-for-sale/property-42339766.html
9500 sq feet of property with a guide price of £175k, but what could you do with it?
I live in rural Wales and there are lots of large houses like ths for sale. They are not being bought because there is no passing trade to support whichever venture you are going for. The properties rarely go for more than the asking price, unless someone has a dream that they wish to turn into reality, but it isn't normally sustainable.
Wales hasn't managed to attract a large tourist industry, because there is very little there. This is ideal for some because they want the quiet retreat and solitude. But that means no people. No people means no industry, kids don't want to go because it's wet and no entertainment... etc.
I had a friend who opened a very nice residential home in one of these properties, but again, it was unsustainable. She sold up and went back to London in under 5 years.
Others have tried posh hotels and as I said, health spas and retreats, but there is not enough trade to make them viable, unless based somewhere with a natural throughput, like Llandudno.
They do make magnificent private homes, but take a huge amount of upkeep.
Honestly not convinced it could be used for business without some serious thought as to the number and type of people who go to the town annually.Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.
