Don't berate yourself by comparing yourself to others.

I feel I should stress that I don't spend a lot of time doing this :) In fact probably a lot less than seems to come across on here.

Yes, there are parts of the situation that I would rather were different , but they are what they are and I will do my best with them.

Scanner is v useful. Do you have desk space for cheap printer with scanner and expensive cartridges PLUS an old laserjet printer with very cheap cartridges for occasional long print runs?

I used to have a scanner - not sure I'd bother again as I'd probably take a photo and transfer that onto the computer instead.

My depressing never ending recruitment experiences are still ongoing - we are always hiring these days. 7 vacancies out of 25 head count. 49 applications for one role I'm trying to fill and only 5 for 2 temporary roles. This time I convinced HR to advertise externally rather than relying on our website but the results were no different. General standard was very poor - noticeably worse than six months ago and disastrous compared to 3-4 years ago.

Just reflects that the city is hiring now and wages are going up. Our pay bands haven't moved since 2007. Senior management has it's head in the sand and is generating hopeless suggestions and witter about favourable work life balance (which vanished at least 5 years ago) whilst insisting pay packages benchmark favourably to competitors and pay is not a factor - meanwhile more of our staff leave to do more junior roles elsewhere for 50% payrises.

will you hire someone looking for a career change? i could do with a change of scenery :p

Otherwise, good luck. I find a brand name helps in getting a better applicant too.

    Regarding the earlier clothes discussion:

I am a real scruff bag. Working in a lab suited me well as jeans and trainers was fine everyday. Nowadays I make a token effort towards looking office-appropriate. I did spend the afternoon with mud splattered up the back of my Sainsburys black trousers though as some of us went for a long walk at lunchtime and it was rather muddy (our site is in the middle of nowhere) :)
I got a few too many surprised comments along the lines of 'blimey, you scrub up well' at our Christmas do, which perhaps suggests that I should make a tad more effort at work. Oh well. At least it does actually make a difference when I bother to put some make up on!

    Workwear here:
OH wears a mixture of things - he has a lot of choice and is appropriate for wherever he is that day. In the office - shirt, jumper if chilly, chinos, boots. Presentations open necked shirt, suit. Meetings suits/linen suit if very formal a tie, possibly one presented to him by his hosts. Dinner out smart casual

At events he wears logo'd shirts or polo shirts or full wet weather gear - all of which has his name on it. And sunnies, mus'nt forget the sunnies, and a baseball cap.

He may be surrounded by the high powered, people in shorts and tee shirts, teens in all sorts, men in red trousers.

    DD
DD looks good going to work, which surprises me as she is such a scruff at home and makes no effort. Hair washed and left or tied up, no make up . Trousers, usually from next, and tops. Skirts, cardigans and dresses from white stuff with boots. She has a couple of trouser suits but is not overly formal.

    Me
Smart and friendly usually a dress and jacket, a jumper and skirt on cold days with boots, and dresses and cardigans in summer.
  •:eek::eek::eek:Just spoken to my poor darling OH - he rang from Chambers, where their Chambers meeting just finished (!!)

He's doing a 4 day case this week in the East London Tribunal, Leicester on Friday, and just found out today he's in Manchester all next week for a different case, and has to get that prepared by then, somehow. He sounded knackered, and says he still has a good 3 hours work to get done.

    :eek::eek::eek::eek:
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

I'm very tight on desk space at the moment... plus, don't have enough plugs and don't really want to bring in electrician as the place was bodged-it-themselves by previous owner. That's one of the things that is drawing me closer to the combo option.

Silvercar, that's something I hadn't thought about, thanks.

DW has an HP Officejet provided by her employers. It works really well.

If you don't need colour printing then you could go for a laser all-in-one. The ink does not dry up on a laser.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
