It's not just the ISA - we have about a 50% deposit but would only put down what we have to as an official deposit in order to get the best rate - ie 35 or 40% and leave the rest in an offsetting account so we had access to the money if needs be. Would be cheaper to plough all that money into the mortgage but more flexible to have the cash available.

It is getting to be a ticklish problem for me too - I maximised the mortgage at 2.49% fixed no offset, at the time I was getting 5% on most of my cash isa and 2.5% on the rest but come August I will have about 50k that I am paying for at 2.49% and not know where to put it to get an equal return. In theory I could overpay the project mortgage at 3.5% but then I lose the access to the funds and it has tax disadvantages. Still I went for the fix now as a punt that rates will rise and I will be able to return more than 2.5% later in the fixed term so I guess I will have to put up with the short term cost of sticking it in the First Direct ISA at 2% :(
    I think....

Um, might be......I don't have the most important one though, lol....

If he wants to I can start something and people can yell if they want in?

Fine by me - but if involving people other than those who were discussing elsewhere/ have already exchanged email addresses I'll set up a new email address (or bow out) as my email address isn't very cryptic... :)

    Is it pretty?

I really want to see thunder snow.

I walked in thunder-hail. I quite like walking in the rain (as long as not going to spend the day sat around in rain-soaked clothes), but this was a whole new level. The hail was kind of sideways and there was less than a second between the thunder and lightning. Funnily enough I didn't see any other pedestrians...

It's funny how our views of medical ethics vary - like Jenner and smallpox vaccine. He had this idea that cowpox was protective, and to prove it, deliberately gave cowpox to a small boy, then tried to infect him with smallpox, and the boy didn't catch the second. Then he did the same with lots of other people, too.

Now, the idea of using children in such a way would have everyone hysterical (rightly so). But we still think of Jenner as a Good Egg.

I agree that over time medical ethics do change. It's not long ago that people were sectioned for moral degeneracy (e.g. being a single mother) and sterilized for having mental illness.

I've got a horror, personally, of the idea that someone would decide to do CPR or intubate me under certain circumstances. For example, after a massive stroke or after breathing has been affected for long enough to cause brain damage. While these things may save my life, I've seen the quality of life they often give the survivor. I wouldn't wish it on a dog. If a vet did it to an animal he'd be prosecuted by the RSPCA.

Yes, CPR or intubation may save your life, but if someone's decided that they don't want it - knowing the risks - then people ought to respect that decision.

Doctors do not know best. They do not have to live with the consequences of their decisions.

Has any one been to the ideal home show?

Have always wanted to go but is it worth it really? If it is I might be able to get a weekday away by my self in march to toddle up and have a look.

I've been a few times, courtesy of MSE free tickets.

It is a lot of walking around. Nice if you like free samples/ looking at kitchen gadgets/ sampling food and wine/ looking round futuristic houses.

It is busy and exhausting. Lots of people have those old lady trollies as you get given so much stuff from stall holders.

I have made big purchases from there - the house alarm and the water softener.

I've been a couple of times too. I found it hit or miss. The first time I went it was great, the second it was busier and I didn't enjoy it as much as there was too much queuing to do the fun stuff. IIRC it is better to go in the week as that is when it is quieter.
