It may not be jealousy Gen, could also be pride. Alternatively old mates may feel out of place in new pub, or may find it difficult to talk stuff they don't understand.

In my younger days I dated a guy for a short while who went to school with Princes, I went to school with Princes fish paste sandwiches. Sometimes the gulf is too big. It takes time and maturity to learn about the world other than that we come from. Some see that as a fantastic adventure, for others it is just too hard.

Thank you to everyone who commented on DD's card. I am still feeling happy about it. After the discussion on here about single people's feelings about their parents' marriages, I sent a text to my dad, saying that on this date I was thinking about him and mum and what a blessing it was for the four of us kids to have been brought up by parents who loved each other so much. He phoned to say thank you, and how much it had meant to him, and that many years ago he and his sisters had agreed that they felt that way about their own parents' happy marriage.

It's not jealousy, it's just that nobody likes to be seen as a free l0ader - and also scared that they'll be asked to "split the bill" without warning, or "snide jokes" start coming out about you being a free l0ader , or it's being said behind your back.

To be fair, they're all from pretty well off backgrounds so it's not like this is some kind of adventure into the unknown. It's that they're at the stage in life where kids and mortgages weigh heavy on the budget.

If anything, I'm the one in the group from the poor background. For example I didn't get an education at a fee paying school whereas all of the rest of the group did.

It makes me feel uncomfortable seeing people 'waste' money even if i know they can afford it

That's probably the problem then:

"Well, it's not as though I really can't afford it, because actually I could afford that kind of meal out if I really chose to, but I have other priorities at this stage. I might feel OK letting him pay for me if I had nothing and really couldn't pay, but I'd feel weird letting him pay for me if it's just that I'm choosing to prioritise other things. But at the same time, I really don't want to spend that much on a meal, so I think I'd better not go."
