News says it's 80mph here, but no idea what it's actually doing right here, right now.

Pastures you must stay indoors. It is safest. Any damage you can assess tomorrow.

    Sounds terrible outside.

He wasn't near you. Just nearest to you than other nice peeps. I wans't suugesting he stay the noght with you :D. He was at Overton. Now he's got a lift with some one. I'm not even talking about it because he's going in a totally barmy direction. He's having an adventure, which normally I'm cool with and onside for 100 percent , but not in this weather. He's not going to get home tonight, and he's not going to make it back to London either. Shrug......lsometimes one needs adventure in life. If you can oly get it in the commute its a bit rough.

    That's hilarious.
It's not loss of life in those cases as they were all going to be leaving anyway.

Not only that, but it prevents the loss of the lives that those particular bombers would have taken with them when they went. :)

Absolutely. Somebody should nominate it to them.

Oh dear, electrician discovery more problems.

It seems a lot of plug points are on spurs not rings.
He says the cables are in pretty good condition, just the wiring pattern that is odd.

He wants to reduce some RCBs (?) to be safe. In fact he phoned the electricity council and asked for permission to put in 20 amp fuses rather than the 16 that would be recommended for spurs and they agreed that was acceptable.

He's gone for today. Made me promise not to use the toaster, microwave and kettle at the same time this weekend.

RCDs are great. One of my kids did something stupid several months ago - can't remember exactly what but something like mowing the mower cable. The RCD did it's thing, nobody got hurt, and all is well. :)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Why can't they just earth it now? Earthing a circuit isn't at all difficult.

Everyone has said that is messy and difficult. Don't know why. They all seem to think that making sure no fittings are metal is fine.

We've had some metal switches since we've moved in without harm. And the previous people also did.
And why are they telling you not to swing from the chandeliers? Even if they're live, you can't come to any harm swinging from them, but only if you're touching both the chandelier and something else (conductive and attached to the floor, wall etc) at the same time.

I think "don't go touching" was his phrase, "just in case".

Wiring a live wire with an earth coloured wire is actually really really dangerous. Anybody working on the circuit in the future will expect earth coloured wires (green or green/yellow stripey) to be harmless to touch, and a live wire certainly isn't. [X-posted with michaels and others]

Except we know the light circuits aren't earthed and anyone looking at the main board would see that too.

When we moved in we had the main board changed to comply with the regulations as they were then. So we've had RCDs since then. However no-one has looked inside these sockets and switches before. One of the things the electrician found he said would cause a fire before the RCD even blinked, but it was a socket that was boarded up inside the hot water tank unit. So we have never had a need to use it. Other things he found would have "just" caused a circuit breaker to trip. Or may cause a problem if anyone is tempted to meddle with wiring without checking things out first.
