On the news some old guy got killed by tree while checking out his garden today. Poor sod...

The tree we keep saying we'll chop before it falls is saying dramatically and its fruiting branch (its saving grace) as come down tonight, but the tree is still standing , or was when I checked a while ago.

As a tenant if there is damage at least you know someone else has to fix it and promptly.
Yes, but that doesn't help me wondering what's out there..... in the dark ..... and if I'll lose the leccy .....

No, of course. :). All you can do is the same as anyone, be a bit prepared. But rest assured at least the financial clean up and any significant housing dramas your landlord has to take care of you. :). Its good to have that reassurance.

A senior manager at work emailed me this morning to say she was definitely working from home today.

A very grumpy neighbour had knocked on her front door early this morning to tell her that one of her front garden trees was down. Apparently the tree surgeon was equally grumpy to be rung at 730am to ask for his services ... !

Not sure about the damage caused, if any. It's windy here but not as bad as earlier in the week, when gusts were up to 60mph. Only 40mph at present.

One of my house criteria is "not near trees" - outside here, the second I put one step out the front I am under the branches of some 30-40' big trees (no idea what, fir types I thing, tall/wide).... and that's where I go for a smoke.... and I don't want to sit in the car in case another tree lands on it (as it's in the wind's direction to do that) ... and I can't go further afield as there's no protection from the wind

Hope the wind eases for all of you further south tonight. In my experience, fence panels don't tend to get blown around once they're horizontal - it's the fact that they're vertical before being blown down which makes them vulnerable.

News says it's 80mph here, but no idea what it's actually doing right here, right now.

Exactly. A bit like whilst it is lovely to get an annual Valentines card from my mum, there is sometimes a pang that that is the only card I will receive. Nothing more than a pang though, and I am very pleased for all those that I know that are in loving relationships.

Spirit - that you even thought how your DD might feel says a lot for how much you care for her. I'm sure she is very happy that you and Mr Spirit love each other so much and celebrate it by exchanging Valentine's cards.

I got a card from DD. It has two very cute Jack Russell puppies on the front, which are lovely, but the thing that really got to me was the message inside:
    Dear mum
    Happy valentines
    Day
    Love
    DD!
Ps I thought I'd do this for you because you have no man to do it for you!

The downstairs light circuit (or at least part of it) isn't earthed, so metal switches of any kind are a big no.

The fact that some of the light switches we are replacing were already metal is irrelevant apparently. It is not good practice to have metal switches without earthing the circuit. We also shouldn't have metal lights really, but as we are not actually changing those they will stay, we will just have to remember not to swing from the chandeliers!

Why can't they just earth it now? Earthing a circuit isn't at all difficult.

And why are they telling you not to swing from the chandeliers? Even if they're live, you can't come to any harm swinging from them, but only if you're touching both the chandelier and something else (conductive and attached to the floor, wall etc) at the same time.

I agree. Especially when they say its for safety in case there is a lose wire - I'm getting a professional to do these switches, so there shouldn't be any lose wires.

    The funniest conversation.

Electrician (E): this two way wire isn't right, they should have used a 4 wire cable and cut the earth one off.

me: So they needed 3 wires and used a 3 wire cable?

E: yes, but that is wrong as they've used the earth as a live

me: So they have used a 3 wire cable for something that needs 3 wires?

E: yes, but the correct way is to use a 4 wire cable and cut off the one you don't need

me: Leaving 3 wires to use?

E: yes, but one of the wires is now the wrong colour

me: and that makes a difference because....

me: so do you want to replace the cable

E: no it would be too messy, I just wanted you to know.

Wiring a live wire with an earth coloured wire is actually really really dangerous. Anybody working on the circuit in the future will expect earth coloured wires (green or green/yellow stripey) to be harmless to touch, and a live wire certainly isn't. [X-posted with michaels and others]

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Quite windy here now. Per netweather.tv, it will gust up to 65mph and won't let off until 3pm tomorrow afternoon.
