Also, I've been thinking about the part of where pastures has been looking that is "the wrong side of the tracks". There are probably still nice streets in that area, but you need ultra local knowledge. You may be able to get something reasonable there if you can tap into where's good and where definitely to avoid. I live in such an enclave myself and it meant I got a good house at a great price in a lovely street, whereas a lot of people would turn their nose up at the neighbourhood.

My last (rented) house was in just such a nice enclave within a less nice wider area. It was great - although not so good for school catchment.
I think Lydia's dd might approve of the wall I started last week and have just finished.

Indigo, green, pink and a yellow cream all on the one wall. :) And yet, some how its still very demure.

    Oooh. Pictures please!

Thanks for the hug - needed that! I was supposed to be meeting up with some friends tomorrow but they bailed earlier in the week (with good reasons). Don't think that is helping - I could have done with seeing them... My weekends tend to be quite antisocial - I live on my own and don't have a very good social life (apart from on here) as none of my friends live very close by. Definitely something I need to work on.

I have friends nearby but limitations on getting out to see them. This place is great for all of us limited social life people. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

When I have put things on freecycle it can be interesting deciding who will have them. Anyone who just says I'll have it, no please or thank you is out. Then you have to decide if you believe the sob stories, and that's before deciding, offering and no-shows.
I am more hardcore than DH though, I rule out ones because of their dodgy/irritating email addresses, he thinks I shouldn't discriminate on that basis!

A question for silvercar (or any other experts) micheals, DW and 3DKs may want to fly to South Africa some time around xmas. WE might want to include Botswana on the trip and ideally I would like to fly back business class as it is an overnight flight. I am thinking airmiles might help. I have none but could easiliy acheive 44k using Amex Gold Rewards and might also be able to do a couple of ba amex double ups if they can be done in the timescale. What are my options?
    I think....

It's back on the market, £10k less. They never bothered phoning me .... odd how inefficient agents are.

Quite incomprehensible. I went into one agent (let's call them agent A) and told them what I wanted. I was aware as I described my requirements that I had a particular house in mind, that was on the market, over my budget, with a different agent. Then the house I liked came on the market with agent A, dropped in price so that I still couldn't afford it but wasn't any more expensive than some of the other stuff they kept sending me. Did they send me details? No, they kept sending me details of stuff at the same price, but without the features I'd said I was looking for. (Now I want that shrugging smiley.)

Sorry for the whinge. I really don't have a lot to complain about by anyones standards. Its just the culmination of a few things this week, and sometimes its difficult when you come home to an empty house and don't have anyone to vent to/ give you a hug!
It is - and nobody but people in that position can begin to understand the whole concept of being alone.

They'll tell you "Oh sometimes I get home and my OH's not there!" or "Well, my OH's away this week..." But I know what you mean.

Hugs to both of you. It's not quite the same for me, but at least I know I only partly get it.

One group used to put a whole blurb about people waiting 3 days, so that workers get an equal chance of a look in as the layabouts and professional re-sellers. As if, if it is on freecycle, you want rid and quickly.

I once put a fish tank on something similar to freecycle. The first person inspected and rejected! Then someone I vaguely knew asked, so got it. I then had rude emails from about 8 other people about how outrageously I had behaved. One said he was a teacher and 30 children would be deprived as a result of my actions without ever having said he was a teacher in his request email. Half the people responsible thought that I should also deliver. I had made the mistake of replying to people and saying that it was going to a family with young children where one had a fur allergy, thereby inviting criticism that I had favoured her allergy over their causes!

I have also met some delightful people, who were genuinely grateful for stuff, either because they truly believe in freecycle or because they couldn't afford to buy the items new.

Sounds quite amusing! Can you advertise stuff on there that doesn't exist just to get into email arguments with idiots?

I find the tiles in the utility room very cold underfoot if I go in there without shoes. I am looking for a large mat that's not too expensive but will go in the washing machine. Any suggestions, please?

We have the same problem in our bathroom and kitchen. I just wear generic sheepskin boots when frequenting those areas.

    Hi All

I've just put our old (but working) Miele washing machine on Freecycle and got over 20 replies. I just wondered whether anyone here wants it?

How do you choose who gets it on Freecycle? Are the replies genuine? One chap who picked something up from us was a secondhand dealer. I was not impressed.

Either trawl the wanted ads to see ho needs a washing machine or Just have to trust to luck.

I have felt 'caught out' by people who want to sell on, rather than meet a genuine need.

I love that bit,:o. Mainly because I don't work I guess. I look the people up on the company website so I know what they look like. ( on a weird fixed smile and frozen face day any way ).
I used to enjoy that when I had a partner to bring work stories home. I am beginning to get comphensible stories of that kind from my kids, but DS has a very stable social life that generates very little news, and DD's is so constantly changing that it's hard to follow.

Have at least one thing to get sorted first (might take a bit of courage to confront), then I will try and grow some leaves to go with my roots :)

Can we help encourage you to be brave about confronting it?
Turtle mats? Not very pretty but wash well and non slip. We use them with the dogs on polished wooden floors because of the non slip nature. They are not attractive and a littl e pricey but indestructible.

Alternatively simply dhurry rug, but slipping might be an issue for kids running through?

I'll look into those, then. I don't think they run much in the utility room - it's not on the way to anywhere.

Is it possible to donate white goods etc directly to charity rather than stick on freecycle? Presumably there must be charities who collect this stuff and give it to people who need it which would cut out the risk of it being sold for the profit of some tax dodging black market idiot.
