This close to Christmas perhaps it's better that they're not...?
Bit of a hard day for me today. It's my late Dad's birthday which was always the start of Xmas. I always get despondent on this day.
Hope Mrs Gen and the Generalissimos are being there for you, Gen. <hugs>PasturesNew wrote: »It's wild here. I know I shouldn't take it personally, but that makes me quite angry. I understand when people drive in bad weather because they need to get somewhere - I do that myself. But driving in bad weather just for the fun of it? Evading warnings of dangerous roads? I just hope she doesn't kill anybody.
Sorry about that - I no longer have the comfortable assumption that serious road accidents are "things that only happen to other people".Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Lets hope the trains are running today for those of us who have to work.0

I'm jealous; I like fair hair, but dyeing it blonde wouldn't work on me.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

The red numbers are the percentage of genes you have in common, assuming no cousin marriage Pakistani style.
(excluding maternally-passed mitochondrial DNA)0 -
Isn't that all averages? So, for example, you might actually share more or less than 50% of your genes with a sibling, or more or less than 25% with a grandparent or grandchild?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

I think it gets complicated. Most genetic material needs material from both partners, but there are a few autosomes that require material from only one partner.
As I understand it.
So, the statistics could be slightly out, but not by very much.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Yes there has to be an element of average about it.
For any single relationship there must be an element of bell curve about the chances.
Taking a simple example of brothers and sisters, I think naturally there tends to be a bias in favour of boys (the smaller sperm swims faster but does not have the same endurance); but it is the one area where parents have traditionally tried a bit of gender selection.:
I think, but I don't know, that which half of our chromosome-pairs we pass on is random?

Now, don't quote me on this, but although the original theory was that it was random there has been recent research that suggests it isn't completely random. Environmental concerns might affect what chromosomes you receive from your parent.
Edit: Here, http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0001086 , for example is a bit of research that I don't understand. Have fun reading it“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
