.... PN was warning me that it would be silly to buy a house on an island to which the ferry only went twice a day. I decided that since it was only a small stretch of sea to cross, I should get a boat, and was sorting out a boat and a trailer, so that I could tow the boat when driving, and then put the car in the boat to get across the water to get to the house and back. I was wondering if this was really practicable when I remembered I've already been in the house nearly 3 years, and was troubled not to be able to remember how I've been managing the sea crossing. When I woke up I realised ....

Getting your own boat's not the answer anyway.... weather's too unpredictable and where'd you keep the trailer at the quayside while you were crossing... and the other side you'd need another car/trailer.

That's a posh alert; it's what the middle classes do apparently.

First/last/only time I've ever come across one was in 1982 or so, when my boss wanted me to type up his family letter. I thought it was odd then......

I think it would be pretty futile for me to deny being middle class, don't you?

Actually, come to think of it...

Single parent, claiming benefits (not specifying which ones), left school at 16 with no GCSEs ... do I qualify as a chav? (That's all true, BTW, even if deliberately misleading.)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

What you need is a drawbridge... Plus, a proper castle. And a cannon.

No, I wouldn't need another car on the other side. I was going to be able to put the car and trailer in the boat and take them with me. Besides, the driveway to the house was right at the water's edge, so no need to drive anywhere much - although I was concerned that the drive would need widening to make space for the boat and trailer.

    Dear Father Christmas,
Please can I change my present? Instead of Monsters University on DVD, I would now much rather have a new airbag unit and engine thermostat. Apologies for the late notice.
    With thanks and best wishes,

Well the trains still seem to be running. And the bloody planes are still flying into heathrow 6 inches above our roof. It seems that it's just a bit windy and not the apocalypse after all!

What really naffs me off is everybody using the "single parent" label, when it was originally, in my world, meant for slappers who got up the duff without a thought ,.....

    You're a widow. That's very respectable.

    Benefits - scrounger!

Everybody left school at 16 .... for some of us the school would have refused to have us back :) No GCSEs - because you're an old duffer and it was O levels :)

However, on the matter of you being a chav...
