Water is coming through a lintel over a window. This cannot be good news.

Does anyone know how, why or the scope of the bad news here?

Hm, I wonder if there is some putty missing? Hard to know unless you have a photograph. It's probably not too hard to fix.

Isn't that all averages? So, for example, you might actually share more or less than 50% of your genes with a sibling, or more or less than 25% with a grandparent or grandchild?

The NPT's only Genetical Society member clears throat and coughs politely!
Yes your identical twin will have virtually 100% genes in common, and all other sibs can have anything between 0-100% with 50% being the mode/ mean/ median. So your parents sibs could be between 0-50% in common. your first cousin could be between 0-25%. So a first cousin could have as much in common as an uncle or even at a push one of your own sibs.

If a pair of twins married another pair of twins, the first cousins would be as if they were siblings, but legally marriagable I think. Though not if there's any sense in the world!

Girls have 50% of their genes from each parent. Boys have slightly more from their mum. Girls get some of their life expectancy from their dad. If a dad's 20 and has boy and girl twins the girl gets on avaerage about 5 extra years of life. If he was 60 the boy and girl would get the same expectancy.

    Fascinating subject, genetics!

Is that why you don't have a precise 50% chance of inheriting a disease from a parent?

That was silly, clearly the chance is less than 50% because it maybe something they got by chance not by inheriting it or they could have inherited the conditions that make getting the disease more likely rather than the actual condition.

I wasted this afternoon crossing London, a city which gave every sign it didn't want to be crossed.

All relevant trains cancelled or delayed, and the delays were usually announced just after alternative trains had left.

I asked the station guard if the train I was running for on platform 4 was going to my destination (so many trains were late I wasn't sure it wasn't a delayed earlier train). He said "I better check" and spent so long doing it he then came back and squinted at the wall display and eventually said " yes it is but you'll miss it now".

    And he was right.

We've had a few hourx' respite from rain/wind - apparently the bad stuff's coming in waves; the second tranche is about to start... allegedly.

I am having to be absolutely silent while sister watches uber-boring Mastermind. Farq she watches some cr4p :) .... she's not even answering, so clearly knows nothing :)

I've managed to extract the Xmas food shopping list; no idea when I'm going though..... we have to buy some form of turkey in case mum does come ... and then it seems that 600g is skimping .... oh well. Anything for a quiet life.

    Oh no! What happened?
    Sounds like: typical women drivers....

    What's happened?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, PN

Nothing exciting happened. The airbag fault light has been on for a couple of months. I haven't needed to carry any passengers and did very little driving for 3 weeks of that due to travel for work so I waited until back near to a garage I trust...
Was hoping it was a faulty sensor, sadly it wasn't. They also found a bonus extra problem with the engine thermostat. I did however get a morning at a local hotel spa. And they gave me a (probably stupidly expensive) branded soft toy as I'd been left waiting quite a lot (wasn't in any rush luckily). Asked for the part number for the windscreen wipers which I'd also been told needed replacing at MOT (but I was going to get from an inside connection) and they chucked them in for free. Plus I got referred to as a 'young lady' by two lads who I don't think realised I must be at least 10 years older than them :)

I'm £650 lighter than I was this morning though. That's a mortgage payment

Its first floor, and on the side...hmm, there must be a word for this. The side where if you were looking at the house the roof forms a triangle...so the guttering is not on that side......

S its in the middle of a blank wall.

I think that's called the gable end.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I probably shouldn't smugly announce that I had no problems getting about. I did get very wet though if that compensates.

    Gutter.
That's why I'm looking to change my car. For 2-3 years I've awaited the outcome of an MOT with dread.
This year I got a list of recommendations.
It's 12 years old, & approaching 100k, so II suppose it is time. I want to avoid that kinda bill.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Mine is 7 years old, but has only done about 26,000 miles. Apparent they were quite rare faults. That had better not mean that I've got the common ones to come any time soon!
