Yes, I hope that the market is more buoyant now in general for pure collectables like coins. I was all ready to go pro with postcards and stamps in 2008 but after the credit crunch the buyers just melted away. I haven't thought about it again - I'm about to start a postgraduate degree anyway, so I won't have time to do it - but it was depressing that it all seemed to go well when I had private sales from my own collection but as soon as I thought about it seriously, the banks went bust and people were no longer buying in any great quantities. I didn't have the stuff that sold particularly well and I didn't have any seed money to buy stock (the money from private sales got eaten up in paying bills etc and trying to get rid of my overdraft), but if I did ever go into that market, Delcampe would be the place to do it.

    Good luck.

A bit of light relief as it's YDC time again on eBid:

No problem. I think eBid needs to sort itself out, I think some of its cost structures are at the heart of a lack of advertising revenue and thus buyer traffic, but I'm someone who will quite happily buy from anywhere, and I know about sites like eBid, so I really hope it all goes well for you.

If I seem a bit pro-eBay at times, that's just the site I'm used to as a seller, and I'm a big advocate of consumer rights as someone who has been buying online a long time.

The best to you in your studies. eBid is picking up now in the areas of coins, stamps, collectible cards, and some exciting sports memorabilia stuff is starting to show up (pretty high ticket items).

    Thank you.

Yes, most of my purchases there have been collectables of one sort or another; I've found some good stuff and I'm glad to see there are fewer individual worthless stamps listed like there were a year or so ago when I was last browsing those categories.

To bring in the punters seriously, I think they have to have people list media or consumer durable items there though. It's a bit chicken-and-egg, which is why better advertising to the buying public would help, but to generate the kind of turnover that eBay has requires a certain focus on the items that generate high volume sales. Collectables did get eBay started, but they didn't get rich off the back of us stamp collectors.

Actually, by "sale area" I was speaking of "coins", which I love to sell. It is the only thing I sell that I actually get slightly upset when I have to send to a winning buyer. I sell on eBid & eBay, and I am never bothered by support or evaluation of any venue that I use.

I think I got what you meant. I'm just saying that I might come across as pooh-poohing eBid a bit, but that is because I've never tried to sell there and won't, for the reasons I've given. We're in the same area of interest though.

If you make it work for you that's great.

As an aside I feel I ought to offer a word of caution..whatever site you buy and sell on 'collecting' is a dangerous hobby to start. If I had not got involved in collecting items or sets that took my fancy I would be much richer now and more importantly have a tidy house.

Having read interesting posts from both Crowqueen and savingscruncher and just glancing in an idle fashion at coins or postcards for sale..I had to log out quickly before that urge to buy one or two got hold of me. Some of us have just too much of an addictive nature. :(

    Goodnight one and all
and good luck with the charity auctions.
