Council Housing & Tenant Advice

This may be in the wrong place if so please move :)

Hi

I would like some information on being a council tenant in a council house. I know 2 people a couple and her younger brother got a council house last year, as far as they have said they have not declared all of there income to the council.

The man qualifies as a fully trained mechanic this year so will get a significant increase in salary, they would definitley be able to afford to rent (they could now to be honest). IF he declares his payrise will they be asked to leave the council house and rent privately?

They are planning on staying at the house that they are in forever, as they think they will be given the right to buy. But they could afford to rent privately now let alone when the guy gets a pay increase.

Surely they won't be allowed to buy it when a deserving family could be in the house?

The guy has just had the internet installed and bought another car a Land Rover.

I am getting really concerned that they are abusing the system and they are so proud to brag about it, so I find it hard to speak to them about how its wrong as they can afford to live elsewhere privatley.

So I guess my questions are:
1. Will they be evicted from the council house when the guy gets a pay increase assuming he declares it?
2. Will they be allowed to buy the council house if so how long do they have to live there first?

I just think its all really unfair that they are abusing the system that deserving people should have access to not people who want a cheap ride.

Council tenancies take no account of income, a millionaire can rent and buy a council house.

The issue is different if they are claiming housing /CTax benefit and don't declare the income.

They won't be evicted from council accomodation unless they are something like 6 months behind with the rent. It's theirs now no matter what their financial situation is. Even if it becomes too big or too small for them the council will have to offer them something else.

He will not be asked to leave just because he has had a pay rise. Also 5 years is the minimum someone has to live there before buying.
the council will not evict them if they are paying the rent. At the time they got the council house they would probably have had to provide bank statements etc some councils do ask for that these days to show you cannot buy a place. Maybe they could not afford to rent privately before getting the council house. Maybe there are reasons why they can't rent privately, do they have pets? Is someone at home all the time? Are there children? Have they had a bad credit rating in the past?
I am in a council house, I have the internet, I have an 06 car on the driveway does that mean I should rent privately? Is their car brand new or second hand?
As soon as you are a tenant, unless you are claiming housing benefit, the council have no right to know what money you have.

There are probably thousands of council tenants who could now possibly afford to rent privately but they choose not to many because they prefer to live in the secure knowledge that unless they do something dramatically wrong they will live in that house and no one can put them out... why would you think it should be otherwise?

Yes they have just bought a very expensive fish tank with exotic fish

Is someone at home all the time? No they both work full time

Are there children? No, her younger brother lives with them though he is nearlly 18

Have they had a bad credit rating in the past? No

I am in a council house, I have the internet, I have an 06 car on the driveway does that mean I should rent privately? Dont make this personal about you

Is their car brand new or second hand? second hand but still cost alot

As soon as you are a tenant, unless you are claiming housing benefit,-which they are the council have no right to know what money you have.

I find it totally absurd that you can go into a council house and then its yours no matter if circumstances change and you could afford to buy normally.

No never said that, just if you can afford to rent priavtely why not leave council houses to those who cant afford it do you know how much it is to rent private? yes i do

They are abusing the system in my eyes as someone deserving who cant afford to rent privatley should be in th ehouse not them. They can afford to rent privatelt.

18 k a year, is not exactly a lot to buy a house on!! why shouldn't they carry on renting of the council? if they pay their rent on time, don't cost the tax-payer anything, HB etc.. well good luck to them!!
