  • good morning all fellow potters...i trust you are having a good weekend. I managed to pot £8.56 yesterday which i am pretty chuffed with BUT changing my copper for something bigger to pot was a bit of a nause.

I just wondered if others had had trouble changing bags of copper and if there is a limit on how much copper you can bank. My local post office was only willing to take £3 in 2p's

I ended up taking the remaining £5 to one of these change machines but it cost me 8.9% and I certainly don't want to pay that on my final amount.

I see some people bank as they go along this is not an option for me as I will always have a reason to spend money and I am wanting to hold out to the last day of the challenge to "cashup" my potting.

  • Good question, I had been wondering the same thing.

Found 50p under my bed this morning, added to pot!

Well I would . . . . But gran nicked 2, jake helped himself and so did DH and his mate so we've got about 3 left :rotfl:

My local post office will usually take a small amount from me but it depends on what they already have. An natwest and Barclays both change up everything for me as long as they are complete bags, worst case scenario is I change it up in my purse and feed the self service machines at the supermarket with them. No way will those thieving machines get a penny of my money even if I have to hold up the queue at the local co-0p for 15 mins while I pay for £10 worth of shopping with 2ps :rotfl:

No pennies yet, still in my bed, am in a huff as my £7 off mr T voucher runs out today and DH says he's got too much to do to take me and my mum is off to see my sister today :(. Hate spending more than I have too for food :(

Have you seen about the Kew Garden 50p coin. Supposed to be the rarest coin in Britain, worth about £120. Keep your eyes peeled for one.

Sorry for missing out all the news, that confounded Black Dog is prowling again. Hugs to everyone whatever their news.

I shall keep a look out for the Kew Garden 50ps, thanks Modesty. What a gem IF we find one! Black dog?? I think I must have missed something. Many {{{hugs}}} to you and your DD. :)

Many congratulations to the parents of your little Niece, skyblueshez, to your Niece too...and to you! What a size bless her! :A At least she will be in the best place however long it takes, though it must be so strange for the Mums to have to leave them their. You spoil her for now...then concentrate on saving! ;)

I hope the bread was successful, little_sweetie, darned moreish though I'll bet a bob! T & I are fine thanks, good to hear you & G are also. Be with you shortly, honest! BTW, (this is about 1/4 hr later than tother) but your post wan ideal way to answer blue_mango and for that you've earned a gold star, for the lovely welcome to fishfins too. Thanks a lot. :staradmin

It's always marvellous to read about the lunch savings made, claireyfairy, very well done! :j

How do you know if someone has stopped saving?
I keep potting and reading this thread, just don't like posting much..

It's ok, blue_mango, and is just as LC 2 thought it to be, only aimed at those who haven't declared any Totals with us for a good long while. So long as you declare your Total in November then you'll be fine and will remain on the list. Some folk post every day, others when they can, you please yourself entirely.
I feel rather excited today...I think it has just hit me that in two weeks time I will be a discharged bankrupt than just a bankrupt. The last few years have been very hard and now I see light at the end of the tunnel!! It has taken almost a year to change my spending habits and I still think I can learn more! I will also have a bit more spare cash next month so I will be able to put back the £27 I had to take from it in the New Year which left me devastated (that may be a slight exaggeration but I was pretty upset).

My word, how far you've travelled, Dee! It must have been one heck of a journey for you, but you're almost there and have now turned your life around and there's so much to be said for that. Be proud and keep to budget and keep SAVING whenever possible! You'll not go wrong if you do both of those and always think twice before buying "do I need or just want". Congratulations.....

.......but PLEASE, everyone, don't use Co!nstar to change cash as you're just throwing so much of it away!!!!!! :(

BTW, with regards changing money at banks etc: Some banks can be a bit 'funny' with doing so, though it's usually a case of which Teller you take it to, but if you have problems, try offering your local shops the chance to have some, ours is always glad of it.

Brilliant saving, LittleOwl, keep that up and you'll be doing so well. :D

I take your point, Indie Kid, but when running I reckon water is far better for you than milk. Take a bottle of your own with you!

All the best with making ends meet, Lynn, only ever spend as little as possible, but always save as much as you can. :D

Lovely to read about the memory making, mossy, it's so precious.

Be careful what you wish for, jakes-mum! You could still get a teeny tantrum!!:eek: So pleased to hear Lily's better.
Hi everyone, I haven't been on much but have been potting whenever I can - although it is always small, never above a 50p.

Was feeling a bit disheartened with my little pot the other day, I then realised it was only 1 month since I started and that it was feeling quite heavy. Considering the terrible month (money wise) I'd had, I felt that any money in the pot was a bonus and that when it comes to opening day, every little will help!

I do hope I can put a few bigger coins in over the next few months and I would definitely appreciate some roadkill - I'm not having any luck with finding anything at the moment.

Whatever it is you can save is still way better than not saving at all, GettingOrganised. I'm glad you thought it all out and realised how well you ARE doing, just stay strong and committed - and where roadkill's concerned - frequent people places more, especially CPs and recreation grounds.

By all means bank what you've saved already, redbooties, but be careful of leaving it unsealed!! Beware of taking it from the bank too or you may end up bitterly disappointed come November! :(

Lynne, keep fresh fruit, carrots, celery sticks at the ready for munchies times, or keep drinking water so it fills you more. If all else fails clear off out for a walk or run up and down stairs! Well done however far through you are.......

......you too, Saver88!! Are you and DH still on the smober wagon??

Take care, folk, and enjoy a really lovely day! forums.moneysavingexpert.com

I found 1p in Sainsbugs yesterday which took me to 3p for 2014 :rotfl:

My bank will take 5 bags of coin per day because they're a small branch, but if I go to one of the larger branches with Business Banking then I can bank unlimited amounts as long as it's all properly bagged.

Another bank I use has a machine where you can pay in coin in any form but no more than (I think) 1500 individual coins. I love using it because when I put my pile of coins in there it sounds like a winning fruit machine :D If I was banking a lot, I would do it in more than one transaction.

31p in the pot for me today.

Haha, another big potting for me, Ł.12.01!!! I withdrew some cash yesterday to do shopping and pick-up coat from dry-cleaner, went to Ceilidh dance in the evening and whatever coins were left, they went into the pot.

Fishfins, you are doing good! Never be disappointed by the pennies, there are days when the best you can do is 1p - still it's better than nothing and all small things add up! :)

    Hi,sort_my_own_yard_out.
Some branches of some banks have machines that you simply throw the coins in,and it gives you a receipt for the amount you have banked.I think depending on which bank you use,it either goes into your account(which you could then withdraw if you don't want to leave it in the bank),or you get a "receipt" from the machine, which you can then take to a counter to change for cash.
I know one of my local Natwests do this(and it is a smallish, out of the way branch),and I think another bank might be Metro(though maybe I have remembered that wrong).
It might be worth phoning a couple of different banks and asking them which branches do this, and how it works(ie,do you need to be a customer).Don't forget alot of banks are owned by the same group,so,even if you don't bank with, say,Natwest,if you have an RBS account you may be able to use the same facilities.
    PHEW!!

Glad to hear you are on the mend Sparky! :)

I had a dream that I found 20p in road kill last night. 5 pennies in one door mat, then a 10p and a 5p! Was disappointed when I realised it wasn't real! :o

All this talk of 20p's and 50p's clearly got in to my head. This morning at Church the children (well all of us) were learning about helping others and sharing etc. They were each given a 50p, to either give to charity or add some of their own money to etc to help others. Sadly DD's coin was just an ordinary 50p but it got me thinking. So she went through her money boxes (I normally give her her pocket money in 50p's so she has lots of them) to see if there were any good ones in there.

We found a Olympic Triathlon one which is quite rare and has been selling for around £5 on ebay. Okay it's not £300 odd quid but it will still have increased the 50p she was given this morning!! She swapped her normal 50p for the special one and I've put it on ebay for her. Will be really pleased for her if she is able to increase the money she was given to help more people!! :A
