I'm still not sure who to believe. From the MSE guide to mobile unlocking...
    What about my warranty?

While it's not illegal, unlocking your phone WILL invalidate its warranty in most cases. So make sure you think twice if you're still in the warranty period and have a super-expensive handset. While it's possible to 're-lock' some phones, you shouldn't rely on this.

I must admit that the £30 (ish) saving does make unlocking an attractive option. Although, as Tesco don't actually have any for sale at £130, the difference from other sources is likely to be less than £10 when the unlocking fee is taken into account.

Unlocking A Moto G from Ebay is £2 and thousands and thousands of Tesco MotoG owners have used them successfully. SMGreen1969 is a reliable seller.

Tesco 8GB moto g is £99.00 and an unlock is £1.99 - a sim free 8GB seems to be typically £129.99. Unlocking a tesco MotoG gives a near identical phone to the sim free £129.99 version. There is a slight difference in software in so far as the SIM toolkit is preset to Tesco PAYG and the software version shows it's Tesco edition. Otherwise the phones are identical, Tesco versions even got the KitKat update quicker than the retailer sim free version.

I still doubt many people have had their warranty phones rejected because it was unlocked assuming the unlock did not cause the fault (ie failed attempts to unlocking the phone) - I searched and found no info where the warranty repair is rejected due to sim unlock, but I'm not saying it can't happen of course.

I think MSE are covering themselves in that article - network providers all provide unlock codes, usually for a fee, sometimes only after a period of time but they all do it. So what difference does it make whether Tesco, Vodafone, Three, Tmobile etc provided me an unlock code or some third party unlocker? - if the phone went back for repair the service centre wouldn't know whether the unlock came from my network provider or a third party because an unlock is the same regardless of source.

There might be some exclusions such as phones that needed to be electronically hacked to break the sim lock, eg older blackberry's. Most modern phones simply need an non intrusive code entering to unlock.

    I got the info here

    Video Here

You need to use Dolphin browser app and the Dolphin jet pack app (a different web browser that many find better than the standard one supplied)

and if you encounter 'parsing error' when trying to do this then you might need to look at this (post #23)

  • I have been on the alert list with Tesco Direct for the Moto G but up to now heard nothing. Today I went into my local Tesco and they have one phone for sale (or did have :)).
The CSA told me it was locked to Tesco and couldn't be unlocked, he had already had one returned because the customer could not unlock it.
Do you think the ebay link above WILL unlock the Tesco 8gb Moto G?
I am on Virgin Mobile at the moment and wish to stay with them. TIA

For anyone else trying to get one of these phones from Tesco, I subscribed to the new stock alert over a week ago but haven't had any notifications. I have however managed to buy two of these phones from Tesco on different days by checking their site at 6 in the morning when I got up for work. Searching for Motorola phones bought up the link showing the two MotoGs (8GB and 16GB) as awaiting stock, but clicking on the phone I wanted bought up the page showing it as available. The first one I picked up in store the following day, the second I bought for my wife yesterday and it is scheduled for home delivery on Monday.
  • Thanks for the tips guys, I became a little confused when the CSA told me that the phones bought instore were locked but the phones bought online came unlocked.

Just one other thing, do I have to notify my current company (Virgin) that I need a Micro Sim card? TIA

You don't have to notify them if you don't want to but if you need a micro Sim you could ask them to send you one out But there may be a charge

You could also just go to one of the mobile shops and ask them to cut your Sim down for you Most do it free But some charge a small amount of money

There is always the web that show's you how to cut your sim down yourself if you feel confident.
