Does anybody know if it is possible to get a sim free 16GB Moto G any cheaper than £160 from Amazon?

In theory, they are £10 cheaper from Tesco Direct... but they haven't had any in stock for a while now.

    Give eBay a try.

Try asking in-store, they sometimes have a few.

My Moto G updated to KitKat and I installed the Nexus 5 launcher (aka Google Experience Launcher).

Google Now has it's own page to the left of your home screen(s), and saying. 'OK Google' now works on any screen.

It's easy to do a search for the apk, download, sideload and install it on the phone. Or, place it on Google Drive or DropBox, and download it straight on to the Moto G from there.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

  • Hi all and thanks for the helpful thread. Finally got my Tesco 16GB Moto G which I'm planning to unlock, if I decide to keep it. Won't get a chance to play with it for a few days though so hope you don't mind these questions ..

I'm very concerned to read elsewhere that Mot G's JellyBean doesn't support USB UMS and that the KitKat update disables USB OTG. The former allows your phone to behave as a standard USB drive and the latter recognises and accesesses attached USB memory sticks (etc) which can compensate somewhat for the lack of microSD. Please someone tell me it isn't so! And if it is, is there a simple hack that wouldn't void the warranty or requre a PhD in hackery?

p.s. as already mentioned the Moto G is often available at Tesco's Super or Extra stores if you're near one. Worth calling to ask.
  • Accessories work with kk but for reading a usb storage device, you need either the nexus media importer app or stickmount if rooted.

It's been a few years since I unlocked a phone. Am I OK to go ahead and set it up from scratch with language, etc with the Tesco sim before I get the unlock code?

What is the easiest way to get the apps from my old phone, will the Migrate facility work for apps or is there another way? With my last phone I had to reinstall them all from the Play Store.

Probably been mentioned above so apologies but, if I were to unlock my Moto G, does this invalidate the Tesco warranty?

Yes it's safe to unlock after setting up, it doesn't affect what you've done to it.

As for apps, when I handed over my dads one, he signed in and it started downloading them automatically (as it should do) just before the Motorola Migrate process was presented.

We started the migrate process while that was happening, and it caused the app downloads to stop, so don't do MM until they're finished :rotfl:

Thanks, I'll make a note of those, though having to pay for the first option and voiding the warranty (by rooting) with the 2nd is off-putting tbh. Further suggestions more than welcome.

Back to getting the Moto G from Tesco stores rather than Tesco Direct (online), I should mention that the online option gives you a generous 28 days to decide whether to keep or return the phone. No idea though how much I'm allowed to do with it without voiding the return!
