The vendor I am dealing with does not use paypal. However, if I have a friend with paypal, could I do the following?..

    1. Get my friend to pay for the product with barclaycard (e.g. £2000)
    2. Pay my friend back the £2000 by paypal (using Amex)
    3. My friend will collect the £2000 back on to his barclaycard from his paypal account (effectively paying off his barclaycard balance).

Would he be charged more than the 5% cashback I would gain?

    Sorry for thinking outloud

The Shell Citicard has been mentioned a couple of times in this thread, I'm particularly concerned about how it can only be spent on Shell purchases, how exactly does this work, do they just automatically pay off your next fuel purchase or what?

My situation is pretty unique. I am spending about £900 a month on fuel, collecting the VAT receipts and claiming it all on expenses. For me the 3% cashback card, plus the coupons from the V-Power club card add up to a tidy bonus (My GF uses to coupons and gives me the cash). I must be the only person benefiting from soaring fuel prices.

Are there any gotchas I need to be aware of?

I'm not aware of any serious gotchas, and I'm with you on this.
Shell purchases give you 3p in the pound back, other purchases are 1p in the pound. Each month you get a credit of what you earned in the previous month (so OK, you have to continue to spend otherwise it just sits there as a credit balance which is not the right way of working - but you only have to spend up to that credit to benefit).
With a Shell Drivers Club card which also gives you discount (and the occasional promotional bonus in the newsletter) it can significantly help with fuel costs.

Wait, so they just credit your card each month, no waiting until the end of the year or anything like that.

Of course, my cunning scheme is about to come to an end after only 3 months. work are giving me a fuel card :( Oh well it was nice while it lasted.

I guess if I end up in credit, I'll just balance transfer that exact amount off one of my other cards and then close this one.

Whoops - just gone to the Citicard site:shell site
    It says

"Your earned Shell Cash Back on all spend as shown on your statement will only be redeemable against the value of future Shell fuel purchases in GB. If Shell fuel purchases in GB are less than your earned Shell Cash Back, as shown on your statement, the difference will be rolled over to your next statement to be redeemed against future Shell fuel purchases in GB. If you do not purchase Shell fuel in GB for six months or more, any Shell Cash Back earned more than six months previously, but not redeemed, will be lost. "

However as Shell petrol round by me (Reading) is 109.9 - the cheapest in town pretty much - that's not a problem.

    Hi everyone,

I applied for the Amex 5% cashback card. Just found out today that I got rejected. The letter did say that they found nothing derrogatory, just that it didn't meet their requirements. I am going to be travelling a lot on business soon and want to do all my spending with a cashback card. Is there any cashback cards that are less strict than Amex?
  • I have an idea of take the most of Amex card.

Paypal: upload money to your paypal account using Amex card. Then withdraw the money back to your bank account. The problem is paypal charge Amex with USD, you need to pay USD to your Amex. You will lose some money on the currency conversion fee.

Moneybooker: basically they same way with paypal. However it charge 1.9% fee if you upload money using Amex card. And I am not sure if they charge Amex with USD or GBP

    Any other thoughts?

Have a look at Martin's Best Cashback Credit Cards article. He recommends Barclaycard's Cashback card which pays 4% for the first three months (with conditions).

I don't know if it's "less strict than Amex".
