If you've got a(ny) card already, it's worth giving the provider a ring. I tried to cancel an existing card to get the Barclaycard cashback one, which I then found out is only for new customers, but I got offered 3% cashback on the existing one. Result!

How often do Barclaycard pay their cashback?

Good old Skycard are doing away with their 1% skybet cashback scheme, and in any case, along with a ranch of others, my skybet account has been gubbed as I have been fleecing them for bonuses!

    So....where next!

Having searched several search engines, Amex seems the best with 5% intro rate for 3 months, then tiered there after.

Egg Money seems to be 1% (assume this is the blue card!?).

Shell card seems ok at 1%, plus 3% on Shell fuel purchases.

Cant see much else - barclaycard intro only runs to end of July - so wont even have card back by then!

Anything else worth considering? I fell out with Egg a few years ago when they didnt like me stoozing 15k of their money @ 0%. AMEX is not widely accepted.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Could also consider Quidco / Topcashback incentives as part of switch!

EDIT: £40 cashback available on Quidco for Amex
To Stooze or Not To Stooze - Theres only one option :D

Egg Money is the dark green Mastercard, the normal Egg card is light green and Visa. I have an Egg Money card and it's fine, obviously accepted everywhere, and there are sometimes bonus instant cashback offers (e.g. over Xmas there was an offer for an additional 3% instant cashback on Shell petrol) which are added on top of your usual 1%. Their customer service is fine, no complaints there.

Amex are great, I got their card about 3 months ago so just coming to the end of the 5% period, but I am going to carry on using them because their customer service is great, the online banking is very easy to use and the card is accepted almost everywhere that I shop. If you get it purely for the 5% offer, just make sure you don't close the card until a year after you opened it otherwise you will lose the cashback. Amex also have a lot of cardholder offers much like Egg - money off in restaurants, shops, that kind of thing.

To note with Shell, the cashback you earn can only be spent on future Shell purchases, so it is more restricted than the others. Then again, if you buy Shell fuel normally, it's fine.

    Hi

Just applied for egg money(cash back card) and have been approved on line

Now i want to make some money!!

I have all my monthly bills paid by direct debit and was wondering if i use my Egg money card instead of direct debit.Set up continuous Credit card (similar to direct debit but give them egg money card number instead of bank account details)

I was just wondering if any one has used their Egg money card to pay off your mortgage on a monthly basis just to get 1% cash back

Also thinking paying my Council tax, phone bill and possible my gas and electric

Could anybody give me advise or experience of what they have done with their egg money card instead of just the usually stuff ie shopping

    Thanks

    Stevie

Be very, very careful with this.

In theory, it's a cracking idea for a 1pc discount off all your bills. The problems arise when you have a dispute with a supplier.

When you have a DD you can cancel the DD with your bank and, hey presto, the supplier can't take any more payments from you.

With a Continuous Payment Authority, the only way to prevent the supplier taking any cash off you is by cancelling the credit card, which obviously means waiting for a new one and informing all your providers of the new credit card number for payments, possibly causing a few missed payments in between and tarnishing your credit rating.

Good luck to you if you wish to try it, but more hassle than it's worth IMO.

    This is the secret message.
  • I've had an Amex Platinum for a while now due to the cashback and on seing the latest 5pct offer I rang them up to suggest it might be a nice idea to give a similar deal to existing holders. Having spoken to someone in customer relations I was offered and accepted a 3 pct fixed cashback on unlimited spend for 3 months which was a result as I had to buy some airline tickets and hotels and was in for 5k within a few days - so 3 pct on that was worth having. I guess it goes to show if you don't ask you don't get.

I've been looking into this article today... Of the cards in the latest version:

Amex Platinum - I'd prefer Visa or Mastercard
Barclaycard - The rate is 0.5% "which is easily beatable" (according to the article)
Egg Money - I earn more than £20k
Reward cards - I want cash rather than points

There aren't any other suggestions, which I think is perhaps a little unusual. Are ALL other cashback cards a much of a muchness, or are there not any half-decent deals at the moment?

Just to confirm, as I think you're a little confused.: You can apply for the Egg Money card even if you earn over £20k - there is no upper salary bracket.

The reason the article states upto £20k is because for those earning over that, there are better alternatives. Namely, Amex platinum.
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D

I have just got a Barclaycard credit card which pays 2 percent cashback on all grocery and fuel purchases up to a max of £15 per month (£750 spend) until July 2009 and then 0.5 percent on everything else. I thought this was quite a good deal as my biggest purchases are groceries and petrol.

I've still got the Morgan Stanley platinum card in my purse but I don't use it anymore since they cut the cashback rate (ages ago!). I'm much happier with my egg card.
