My paperwork didnt mention cashback either so I emailled them and they replied it was a cashback card... I do get cashback each month

Capital One have confirmed to me that they have discountinued their cashback card for new applications but that there will be no changes for existing cardholders. I wonder how long that will last.

Probably until the card expires or they change their mind

i should have an excellent credit rating as this will be my very first credit card.

This does not necessarily follow.
Do you have a mortgage, contract phone, loan or other credit.
If you have NO history then that is a negative not a positive in this situation.

i need the card for general shopping not just for supermakets or petrol.

Amex is paying 5% for 3 months (and £33.75 via quidco).
This is very good but it's not accepted everywhere.

This should be on your credit report and show a good payment history so this is a postitive thing.

Almost certainly you will from time to time find places where you can't use your AMEX card.
You have three choices.

1) don't get Amex and miss out on the 5%
2) get Amex and also get another back up credit card
3) Get Amex and do what you do at the moment if you can't use it e.g. debit card.
You must be managing at the moment without a card, so you must currently have some way of paying.

Amex is a bit of a pain but how much do you want the 5%?
I've had over £300 for Capital one so you have to work out how much you want it.

i am currently using my direct debit card for all purchases.

The reason i want to switch to credit card is because of the extra protection on purchases under section 75.

What would you consider to be a good back up credit card to the Amex? i have looked around the best i could find was the Barclaycard Platinum Credit Card with Cashback. Although this card only offers 0.5% cashback on all other spending and is limited to £15 a month (which is fine).

Could i get better elsewhere?

I applied a few weeks ago for the cashback card and have just been turned down, but they didn't say it was because they've withdrawn the card.

edit: reading through the credit scoring article, mayeb it's because i always pay my current card on time!

Looking for a cashback card. Would like some advice..

I have been looking but there are so many web sites im hoping maybe i missed a good deal somewhere

I sell on ebay ( part time ) and currently pay all my bills ( ebay invoices ect ) with my business debit card

Was thinking of getting a cashback card. makes sense right.

i want a visa or mastercard only and want to be able to get cashback on all purchases.
any ideas ??
