  • Thanks for the advice. I am not worried about the payment date, just the ever changing statement dates. We pensioners on a fixed income need to know when the bills are coming in. It has meant that we now have a 5 week bill instead of a 4 week one.

The statement dates are the same date each month.
It might vary by one day if it's a Sunday but other than that it stays the same.
  • Not in our case, Nat West has just changed our statement date again so this month we have 5 weeks of charges instead of 4 weeks. They also did it last year with very little notice.

I read Martin's article and applied for the Capital One credit card which gives the 1% cashback. I filled in the application online and got accepted there and then. An agreement came in the post a few days later which I signed and sent back.

Got my card and used it for the first time yesterday. Then the penny dropped. The T&Cs I'd been sent had made no mention at all of the cashback. I thought they might be pulling a fast one, so I rang them. They have pulled a fast one. I had applied for a cashback card but, without telling me, they accepted me for a non-cashback card and sent that.

Obviously, if I'd spotted the absence of any mention of cashback in the T&Cs, I would have not bothered signing them. I think this is sharp practice by Capital One.
Eh?? I give up!! Towel is getting thrown in here! :D

Hi I was hoping to find somewhere in this thread the key differences to help me decide wether to choose Egg or Capitol One.

They seem awfully similar and the article does not do much to seperate them, could someone break them down for me or mention the key selling points of one over the other.

One thing i did notice and i may be wrong, but you can withdraw money with the egg card for free (or is there a catch somewhere since Martin was so insistant that you should never do that with a Credit Card.)

    Thanks

but you can withdraw money with the egg card for free

Egg money is a hybrid debit/credit card.
The idea is that you pre-load the card with credit when you get paid and use it for spending through the month.
You get a low credit limit for this reason.
If you are in credit then you can withdraw your own money for free.
You will also get interest on your credit balances.

One small advantage of capitalone is that you get an Equifax service for free.
You get 2 free credit reports each year (you can choose when to get them).
You also get alerts each month telling you whether anything major has changed on your report (such as a credit account being added).
The statutory reports are only £2 but this is an on-line service.

I don't know all the details but if you are stoozing then Egg money may be useful.

If you are just using it for purchases then there isn't much in it, but you'll probably get a higher limit with capital one.
Capitalone seem to give a standard £7500 whereas I got £3000 with Egg money.

Capitalone seem to change their cards freqeuntly so you need to check your interest free days and they may decide to send you a different card to the one you applied for.

Capital one pay cashback in January and Egg in March.

Not major difference to my mind, just minor ones.

It may not be the best card, but I've just taken out a John Lewis Mastercard. 1% on all purchases in JL and Waitrose, 1/2% on all other purchases.
    Sent from my abacus.
  • There is a good offer of a Barclaycard at the moment via the Barclays Internet Banking, I have just applied
2% Cashback on Supermarket & Petrol spend, plus a 9 month BT with only a 1.5% fee.

I was hoping someone could give me some help.

I see that Martin's reward comparison table (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/reward-card-comparison-table) still shows the BAA worldcard as the best reward card (net reward of £795 on 10k spending).

Is this still right? I seem to remember its "best" reward was the half-price train tickets for the Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted Express, which has now been withdrawn

Ive been racking up points on my card, but havnt got round to "cashing in". What "rewards" can I still exchange my points for, to get the best reward/point return? What rewards gives the £795 return on 10k spending?

Thanks very much for your help in advance.
