bonytony, the 4% offer closed a while back and they now only give 1%. With capital1 the cashback is on 'all' purchases therefore booking flights on line should earn you your 1%.

I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • I understand 1% cash back applies to groceries and petrol only (cash back is limited to £15 per month) and other purchases cash back is 0.5%.

Golden Rule applies, (pay account in full each month using direct debit, my interest rate on any outstanding balance is suggested 14.9%.

Be careful as booking flights on-line you can be charged a fee.
Same applieds to holidays and sometimes theatre tickets.
Make sure you know what the fees are before you decide how to pay.
They are usually obvious but something to be aware of.
I usually pay for flight with a debit card (unless there is large cashback to cover it but 1% is not enough).
  • im gonna turn 18 soon (at the end of march) and im wondering if there's any good cashback cards for me; i looked at capital one but you have to have had a previous credit card with a credit limit of £5000

im thinking about the egg money one but i saw recently that they've got rid of people who have overdrafts, etc so is it worthwile going for them? (i dont want my first credit card being a rejection - that'll lead for a bad credit rating)

Amex cards can be hassle because you can't use them everywhere which means you need a second back up card.
The charges on holidays/flights can be higher which eats into your cashback.
Small retailers may politely ask you to use another card which may be a little embarrassing.

If you don't mind carrying two cards and operating 2 accounts and don't mind keeping it for 1 year, then I guess it's OK, but watch out for charges on things like holidays and flights. There can be a distinction between different card types and AMEX is always higher than visa/mastercard.

There are other threads on the AMEX card so might be a good idea to do a search to see what other people say.

Is the AMEX Card worth it

Just to add, I think it depends where you shop.
I think you'd find a lot of supermarkets, petrol stations, large stores etc. accept it.
A lot of cheaper stopes (like woolworths, wilkinsons) and on-line retailers won't e.g. play, so you should be able to work out whether it would benefit you.
There is a thread about who does/does not accept AMEX.

Also note that there is some cashback on quidco. Not sure whether its' £33.75 or £40.
On balance I think it's worth applying for and I'm going to once the Capital one period runs out.
  • I will be moving to a cash back credit card soon. Does CapitalOne MasterCard keep changing the charging dates and payment dates of the credit card at a whim, like Nat West MasterCard?

All credit cards have a number of interest free days, but days in the month vary from 28, 29, 30 and 31, so it's non uncommon to vary the dates.

If you find it dificult then direct debit might work for you.
